When I lived in Milwaukee growing up in the '50s we had a neighbor - Mr. Balestrairi - he had an alley behind his house with a fenced yard. We would play in the alley and when the ball went into his garden he would yell at us. I was recently horrified to hear then see my little granddaughter being held down by both parents and 2 dental staff. I ( of course ) had to say ‘ back in my day there was a board that ,…’ And can you believe the dentist said ‘ we don’t use those , it’s traumatic’ ? Getting held down by 4 adults isn’t traumatic? No adult doing the holding can be all that calm .However, with the child temporarily restrained it frees the staff has room to be creative with supports ( gentle talk .pats ,pictures , encouragement, music) And importantly, to explain gently to a child why a person needs it to help stay still so the dr can do his best job and fast !

Wow, just seen this and was so surprised when you said "haircut" there is no way i could have my son at both things in one day. He is so distressed with haircuts he throws up and we cant book an appointment during normal operation hours otherwise customers try to "save" him.
