Hey brother! I'm a Christian biker in Australia who rides a 97 Sportster that was an 883, but which I've turned into a 1275 and done a few mods too. I've owned for 15 years and ridden it on a heap of long rides from Melbourne up to the Gold Coast (1100 miles away) and back, with side trips on the way and so forth. As an 883, the bike was okay, better than the old Triumphs I started out on back in the early 70's, but okay. I wanted the 1275 kit just to give me a bit more power and that has worked out very well. I had already setup the bike for long distance touring and the tank being a third bigger than the one you have, meant that every 160 miles I'd stop and fill up and stretch my legs. I managed to cover 500 miles in a day like that, if and when I wanted to get somewhere in a hurry, but these days I don't care about that so much. I always enjoy the ride, taking in the beauty of God's creation around me and that's WHY I ride. Not to set some kind of record. I've met and known plenty of people who ride big tourers and they all take a stop every couple of hours anyway, so I'm not sure why people make such a big deal about small tanks. If I was heading across the Outback, I'd fit a larger tank and have a Jerry can or two of course, because it's literally a matter of life and death out there. No kidding! Look it up online. People who head across the wide open places of Australia without adequate preparation often feature in tragic stories. The Australian Outback is a vast wilderness and you can drive for hours on a major highway (when there is one) and not see another vehicle. There are pictures of big warning signs placed on the side of highways and roads that head off into that wilderness, that list all kinds of things you should take serious note of. One is to take as much clean water as you can carry. AND spare fuel. ALWAYS let people know where you're going and when. If you breakdown, NEVER leave the vehicle (they're easier to spot from the air, should there be a search) OH! ALWAYS carry TWO spare wheels. There's more, but I can't remember them all. Obviously, on a bike, these things have to be adjusted a bit, but then, so is the route you're gonna take. I have a mate who's done what we call the big loop; all the way ROUND Australia, which is like going around the edge of the USA, staying as close to the borders of Canada and Mexico, plus the East and West coasts, as possible. That's less dangerous because that outer edge of Australia is where over 90% of the population lives, but mostly in the major cities, fo which there aren't many. Davey had some pretty hairy tales to tell when he got home, but he says that the Lord was with him all the way. Love my Lord, love my Sporty and love being out on the road with them.

Watching from Los Angeles. About to pick up my 1st Harley on Sunday. Getting a 07 sportster 1200L with 17k miles from the only owner who is now pushing 70. Its in absolutely great condition and I’m only paying $2800. I feel like a kid on Christmas Day! Can’t wait to ride it daily!

@robertgardner4508Ай бұрын
As a CDL driver, that floats. I would not recommend doing this on medium/light duty trucks (unless your synchro's are just shot already). This will just put excess pressure, and wear on your synchro's and cause premature wear/failure. Just use the clutch, saves a lot of stress and money.

Or you could not burn out your synchros and just use the clutch 👍

I had a 68 vw beetle back in the 80’s I had to speed shift for a couple weeks until I could afford to fix the clutch.

I would assume that the previous owner of my 7.3 ZF6 did this "floating gears thing" because the syncros are gone at 300k i feel that its just fine to use the clutch if you know how to drive a manual you wont burn out your clutch shifting through the gears. if you supposedly float gears i just think you are burning out the syncros

@@JK-op7bpyeah but synchros being completely gone and if you don’t rpm match perfectly it will grind in 3rd so that seems a bit excessive

i am of the opinion it should be possible to not harm the synchros if your shifts are good. thing is if they are not good itd be possible to burn the synchros without knowing it. you should be also able to do a rev match downshift with neutral and no clutch, (if you are good, synchro or no synchro), applying tension like that till it goes into gear? eh, prob not optimal

As a professional driver don't do this if you're not driving a semi truck transmission it is synchronized which means you're going to fuck up the dog gear you're going to fuck up the synchros You're going to have a really fun time with that The other thing you could fuck up is the transmission forks which you're going to be really pissed off cuz that's very expensive especially in downtime The other thing is yes you can get transmissions that were made for semis that are smaller for pickup trucks if you want to float just get yourself an eaton Fuller transmission that only has one counter shaft instead of two 10 or 13 speed they do make it if you want to do this if not please don't do this you'll regret doing this after a while You're basically missing shifts causing damage semi truck transmissions on the other hand can do it real easy especially if the RPM is just right hell I can shift it smoother than double clutching it the whole way especially in a truck stop so smooth in fact that I had a team driver in the back didn't even realize that we stopped when you team drive in a truck stops you know about it but when you get so smooth between your breaking your acceleration and you're stopping that they don't know that's when you damn good but that was years ago for me

Do not do this on a synchro transmission. If you have a synchro transmission you use the clutch every shift. Only on NON-synchro transmissions should you float gears. Only transmissions I know of that aren’t synchro are on semi’s. This is coming from a diesel mechanic that works mainly on semis.

I learned to drive on my grandad's old '50 Ford 3/4 ton PU with the granny gear 4 speed. No synchros, the ole 'grind me out a pound' tranny that you had to 'double clutch' between gears to down shift it to bring the opposite gears to matching rpm. I got to where I didn't need the clutch either after a few week's experience. See how many kids or young adults these days can even get in one of those and even get it into gear, as shifting it without the clutch is impossible for them. However, even the truckers in the multi speed manuals didn't use the clutch after taking off, they just knew the rpm and sounds to know when to shift.

Don’t force it. Light pressure, it will go into the next gear when your engine and transmission speeds match.
@beardsntools2 ай бұрын
Right it's rpm matching, I was hoping you could take off without the clutch, which isn't possible unless you push the car
@Megellin2 ай бұрын
Im not familiar with doing that on newer vehicles, but holding pressure on an older vehicle will definitely make it grind. You have to get it to the right rpm then change gears on the old ones if you want to shift without the clutch. You'll hear, and sometimes feel a rubbing noise not quite as loud as a hardcore grind of you try to hold against it before you slip it in, and its definitely not good on em.

Congrats on your soon to be worn out syncros.... There is a real difference between a box you should shift without a clutch and one you should shift using the clutch, and that difference is if it has syncros in it. When you are holding tension like that the syncro is working hard until the speed matches...

@@OHHyaKnow I think the big difference is gonna be the heavier weights of the parts that need to be spun up on the Dodge vs the Toyota and/or the particular design of the syncros themselves. I had to take the guts out of a CM4054 from a used parts dealer and put it in a different CM4054 housing for an old GMC dumptruck and those are just steel cups and brass disks for the syncros... The funny thing is, that one from the used parts place was a brand new build... it still had machining marks on the gear teeth. They must not have been able to find the plastic pieces for the shift forks, cause they were missing)

You've done a lot of thing no one else seems to ever do, check and threadlock them. the thing I would say, is if you move the nut, you need to reapply the threadlock. so basically if you have any cause to put a socket on the nut, reapply threadlock. They also do put extra pressure on the wheel bearings and that is because the wheel is further out, it's not like having a deeper wheel, it's like having a longer hub. Some countries it is illegal to run spacers, others jsut discouraged, personally I am in the school or get the correct wheel rather than the spacer, as have seen the results of a wheel falling off and injuring people a few times. I won't run them, but then I run a stock, very capable Land Rovers so no need. as turning circle is adequate and another degree really isn't going to make a whole lot of differnce.
