I'm the one who actually found her. Her name did come from my dog who was a rat terrier. Small and sweet but she had a disposition of anyone who approached my grandma. So I guess officially it was Grandma's dog 😊. I actually got to camp out on digs. Brown Hawkins was the paleontologist.

My subjects are all 5mm or less so MP-E has always been a no brainer. For larger subjects the AF of the Canon 100s would be a must if using built in focus bracketing (and stacking with R7) but if you’re happy manually focus bracketing or just taking single shots the Laowa seems a good option at least with Canon for which it retains full aperture viewing and an RF will add stabilisation.

Do they now make any higher quality, 3rd party collars- preferably aluminum- Arca compatible? I only saw one for the 75mm lens. What lights do you recommend and will TTL work with Nikon- no body to lens connectivity at all- fully manual. Not sure if aperture needs handshake with the lens or vice versa.
@MOAB-UT2 жыл бұрын
Good review. I will probably buy the 100mm tomorrow and a collar- maybe this one. If I get this one, I will very simply glue a thin strip of rubber to the inside of the collar 360 to avoid scratching. I would also use some tiny black or clear adhesive tabs to act as stops fore and aft the collar to help it resist sliding. I will also make a thin adhesive label and print the values on it and stick it to the now customized collar. That'll get 'er done. Or spend $1,500 on a lens that doesn't require all that. This is a great lens for the price optically but clearly not refined. Really needs to be a sealed lens and better focus ring- longer and more accurate throw. APO for $4xx and 2x mag. is pretty good- even without all the electronics.

There are a number of collars out there! I have two metal ones I use on my long RZ lenses. To avoid slippage I use adhesive backed foam lining the inside of the collar. I also have a metal Canon collar I use on my Nikon 2x extender.

My main problem was to see what aperture you're about when you're using it. It should be twice slimmer and made of aluminium.
@MOAB-UT2 жыл бұрын
Simple fix. Print a sticker/label strip and type the numbers on it. Done. It goes on the collar.

Great vid! Loved it. Would you say you prefer to use a wide-angle with extensions tubes rather than the Laowa 15mmf/4 macro? I have some great wide-angles but was considering buying the Laowa, but never tried extension rings. I'm ok with an all manual lens though, I have the Laowa 65mm macro, and love it!
@AbbottNature3 жыл бұрын
Well it depends on who you ask. John and I have different opinions on this. He has more patience for the Laowa 15mm, it has a manual aperture so you have to hav e VERY cooperative subject that will not move. You have to open it up to see the subject and then once it is in focus move the aperture back to what you want for the pic without moving and quick enough so your subject does not move. I don't think you can put an extension ring on the 15mm because the focal point would be too far in the camera. You can get a little bit smaller subject with the 15mm vs the 16-35mm wit the extension tube. So that is a bonus for the Laowa. Hope that helps!
@diogocarvalho62473 жыл бұрын
@@AbbottNature thanks! The manual aperture wouldn’t be a problem in my case, since I would be using it on a mirrorless camera with exposure preview turn-off, so regardless of how dark the aperture set, I can still view the subject very easily. Thanks again for replying!

@@diogocarvalho6247 Hi! For canon and nikon mirrorless cameras, I guess an adapter would be required to mount the Laowa lens. Would that shift the minimum focus point far too in the camera?

Stopped after 3 minutes. Because I thought this was a tutorial about photographing insects in flight. But now I see that this is about more gear than a normal person uses. Camera, tripod and trigger. So Thx for the waste of 4 minutes 😊💪

Sorry for the late reply, but assuming you’re normal is a bridge too far. These folks are offering you pearls, but you wanted plastic. Once you realized that, you should have just quietly left. So in your stead, I’m apologizing to John and Kendra for you. BTW - just discovered your videos, and it’s great to see the two of you working off each other so effectively. As a macro photographer, I’ve considered expanding into live flight shots, and you’ve given me some great info to work with. Thank you.
