The metal plates are widely available on Etsy and Ebay, made in the UK, I will add if they can get into wood, they can get through the soft sign plastic. Only acrylic of a reasonable thickness will stand up to it.

A guy gave me dozens of metal plates with holes of 25, 28 and 32mm I found that far easier for me than your method! Have you ever had a robin nest in a kettle? I've had a wren in a boot. I have a robin in my shed at the moment which means I don't have access to it.

I've seen a Robin nest in a coat pocket in a shed
@VanderlyndenJengoldАй бұрын
@@projectnestbox Ha! I had a wren in a coat's hood in the same shed the robin is in now. Closest I got to a wren, you notice their lovely colours. I'd open the door to the shed and the female would perch ready to fly if I went inside, so I didn't go inside for weeks. I thought I'd bird-proofed my shed ,yet they're back. I put up so many other potential nest sites for them too.

AS much as I love the cheeky antics of Grey Squirrels that would be a travesty if they got to those eggs. I know others will say its just nature but still I'm glad your adding some prevention to help the birds out
@VanderlyndenJengold2 ай бұрын
When I started making nest boxes I believe we were advised to use 9mm ply, nowadays RSPB and BTO would suggest 18mm plywood, and maybe marine plywood at that. That's not cheap. I did a local event where I got free wood from EH Smith and we made quite a few boxes with the community. I've made some woodcrete boxes that have been succesful, had a nuthatch in one of them. Fun, if tricky, to make. No joy with batboxes and owl boxes just had squirrels.

Love your builds - as you know I make a few bird boxes in my job role and I'm just trying out the idea of adding an extra 2 or 3mm to the length of the sides and front plate to try and create a drip point to keep the rain flowing off the boxes as quickly as possible I've only made 1 of these so far as it was literally yesterday I came up with the idea and gave it a go. I thought it might be something you could use on your future boxes.

Living in the west of Ireland. Was working on a job and watched a bird flying round an open barn which was acting like a flycatcher as i have seen them abroad in warmer climates. Looked it up and yes was a spotted flycatcher. Found out they are not so rare. Thanks for showing this video. They were nesting in the barn but might tell the client to make a box as well

love this build and your projects - In my day job I'm a restorative justice support worker and one of the elements I teach is basic woodworking/making (so I basically get paid to teach my hobby) which is where the birdbox and hedgehog house and planter projects come from. All the boxes are built with basic range of hand tools to show the guys and girls you can do a lot with a tenon saw, coping saw, pencil, tape measure, cordless drill, a screwdriver, a very basic nail/stapling gun, 3 chisels, a combination square, a 25 and 32mm hole cutter, a lot of elbow grease and a pinch of hope. the finished boxes are then donated to local charities to use or re-sell to raise funds. An other element to it as well is so many people decide their going to try DIY buy a load of expensive tools decide DIY isn't for them and these tools end up in a corner gathering dust so I always advise start with a budget kit if you like the hobby then replace when you can afford to with better kit.

Nice work 👍- and I've just subscribed to your channel - just a suggestion for your finish I use Cuprinol one coat fence paint for my boxes and generally use two as it's never 1 coat and 5 coats if one of my learners decides to stir it first which is a whole different story 😂anyway Cuprinol one coat fence paint is animal friendly and blends well in to garden surroundings etc
@projectnestbox3 ай бұрын
The trouble is with Cuprinol and other wood preserves it only penetrates the first thin layer of ply. The layer of external grade glue prevents it from sinking deeper like it would with natural wood. That's the reason I use masonry paint. I use a wood preserver on my natural wood nest boxes except my Dormice nest boxes, I just use Cedar or larch and leave it natural.
@andymarriott81503 ай бұрын
@@projectnestbox I never thought of that if I'm, honest as I only use natural wood generally 150mm wide 2.8m long 14mm thick planks so it's certainly a point I'll be keeping in mind if I do get around to using ply wood at some point in the future - thanks for pointing this out I really do like to learn and get the views from others with experience and this just goes to prove your never to old to learn something 👍thanks again
