I'm getting ready to do something similar in my new 20'x20' metal shell shop. 6 lights, 4ft long, 10,000 lumens, from 72 watts each. They are 5000k color temperature. 4 will be over the main area of the shop, 2 will be lower along one side used as task lighting. They will all link together, so about 430 watts on one switch on a dedicated 15 amp circuit. They are rated for 50,000 hours, so if I never turn them off, they'll last 5-1/2 years. I like the idea of being able to move them wherever I want, whenever I want with no additional tools or holes. Sometimes I'll need to hang them vertically for painting lights. I plan to use a couple150# magnets with some poly rope and a magnetized cleat to suspension store a couple 35# kayaks up out of harm's way, above the lights.

That new cutterhead looks pretty awesome! What is the benefit of having all of those little knives?
@TrapDoorWoodworks3 күн бұрын
There are several: the first - and most valuable to me - is that a nick in a single knife only takes minutes to change instead of hours. With the long knives, you would shift that kicked knife (or all three lives) in a process that takes a very long time. With this system, you just rotate the nicked cutter and you're done. Changing the cutter completely if necessary just takes minutes. Second is that the cutterheads are carbide, and will stay sharp longer. Third: the knives are indexed and need no adjustment. Fourth: The chips created by this cutterhead will not clog the ductwork. They take little bites that are sucked away immediately, instead of long strips that can easily tangle into a plug that will clog the ductwork. It is also a bit quieter, but even at that, the sound is more pleasant than the alternative. It is really a night and day difference! 😊

Will you use this same paint color on all of your Delta machines? Or will you color match all of them separately?
@TrapDoorWoodworks8 күн бұрын
I will use this same color. The only other Delta machine that is real bad is the drill press, and I will paint that with this batch. The rest of the machines are in better shape, and likely only need a little touch-up, and I'm hoping the color is close enough - but whether it is or not, this is the color I am using from here-on-in.

I agree about oil based enamels. They take forever to dry, but are incredibly durable once they are dry. You're going to have a very nice looking planer once you're done!
@TrapDoorWoodworks8 күн бұрын
Thanks Shed! I'm just hoping I can get this thing assembled scratch-free. From there, I can let it harden up for a month or more before showing it any abuse.
@TrapDoorWoodworks9 күн бұрын
As of today, the base parts (except for the table adjustment bar) are painted and hardening-up. Now, I'll wait at least a week before assembling the base as oil-based paint take a LONG time to harden-up. It will dry, but it is not hard enough to assemble yet. It's looking like the majority of the planer will be assembled before Christmas, and I am still on track to having it done by the end of the year (functioning shop!). It's surprising how bat up a machine can get with a few years of use! What is the history of that machine?
@NewWoodGuy10 күн бұрын
The base was fairly rough! I was surprised at how much bare metal was exposed, but it's a good thing to get rid of ALL of the rust while you have things disassembled. I used to build/rebuild dirt bikes, and they always had issues with dings and rust like that. Glad to see that you used primer, a lot of guys just skip that, and that's a no-no on bare metal!
@TrapDoorWoodworks10 күн бұрын
Thanks New Wood! I was a bit surprised how much work the legs needed myself! That planer was in a very small shop for much of it's life, so it was always smacked-around a bit - then it was in unconditioned space for like 20-years! It was still used, but my last shop was unheated, and things get rusty quick in an unheated garage!

Good morning Mojo, alot of parts when made are hung on a paint dip line, where their are suspended by a wire from an overhead chain conveyer and dip into a tank of paint and then travel through a heated chamber to dry. A lot of paint runs and drop off. I worked in a factory after high school that dipped parts like that.
@TrapDoorWoodworks10 күн бұрын
Good morning 51ubetcha! Maybe we worked at the same factory? I worked in a place like that in the early 80's in the Milwaukee area! It had several drip lines like that, and paint booths scattered throughout the factory. I worked as a spray painter in one of the booths, and would get baskets full of parts that came from the acid etch, arrange them on a turntable in the booth, then spray them. Afterwards, I put them on a drying rack where they would be wheeled into a drying oven. I remember changing-out the 55-gallon drums of paint. The smell was pretty overpowering!

I worked at Broan manufacturing in Hartford in the early 70's. I think now it's called Broan/Newtone. They make range hoods, bathroom fans etc. One can still see there products in stores. I started there doing spot welding and switched to driving forklift. I did move components for the dip line. It was the ideal area to be working during the winter months because of the nearby ovens.
@TrapDoorWoodworks9 күн бұрын
@@51ubetcha Broan is still considered one of the best bathroom fan Mgrs. out there. We have one in each of out bathrooms. 😊 The company I worked at is no longer in business, but they made branded metal products for other businesses. We made the same door closer for like 10 other companies. Powder coating is taking over these days, and that's a good thing! Those solvents back then were something else! 🥴

As this video comes out, the planer's head casting is back from the welders and it will be just fine 😊 The entire planer is filthy though, and I will be spending wherever time it takes to clean it up and get a fresh coat of paint on it. The columns will be the biggest problem. The only quote I have at the moment for re-chroming is $200.00. I have two other places to contact in "my area" (both are over 100 miles away), and I can contact some places across the state as well because we go there fairly regularly. The alternative is to polish them up, and regularly apply CRC 3-36 to lube and protect them. I'll have a better idea tomorrow... What do you think of the DeWalt portable planers?
@TrapDoorWoodworks16 күн бұрын
I have never owned a portable planer but if I were to buy one it would be one of the DeWalt models. Back when I was running my furniture business, the Delta and Makita portable planers were the top of the line, but they would not have held up to the use that I had - I planed MANY thousands of board feet of hardwoods, and would have gone through several portable units in that time! 😮😮 For a hobbyist though, absolutely!

@TrapDoorWoodworks26 күн бұрын
Thank you Larry! We'll have to see about wood prices. Plywood is definitely up there in price, but I am in one of the most lumber rich areas of the world (for hardwoods), and there are sawmills all over the place around here - both Amish and English (everyone who is not Amish is considered 'English'). When I picked-up some maple for the tiny house, it was about the same price I paid in the 90's. If I pick it up from the Amish, I will need to dry it, but then it is even cheaper. Woods that are in demand elsewhere are definitely more expensive, but far less expensive than when they are sold far away. It will be interesting for sure 🤔
