It kind of does, doesn't it? But it's really Eleanor Powell. In her early Broadway days (and when this film was made in 1930), she had a Louise Brooks style haircut, which was popular at the time.

This is a super athlete, by any definition in sports, dance, or art. Famous for her gravity defying speed, physical strength and power, she layed down some of the most intricate rhythms in tap and dance history. Considered by many of the greatest dancers, to be the greatest of them all. Taught by one of the greatest tap dancers of all time, gifted with supernatural energy, natural beauty and charisma, is the greatest dancer of all time, who made it all look easy, sexy, and happy. Eleanor Powell.

No, but it's rare to see. We saw it years ago at a private screening at the UCLA archives. That's when we discovered Eleanor was in it.

At around 1:25 she is lifted on a table and starts dancing. She's on the left side and has short bobbed hair in the Louis Brooks style.

The only on-screen pairing of Eleanor and Esther Williams, her natural successor at MGM. Both were fearless self-starters who essentially invented the formats in which they shone: Eleanor, the unique melding of dance styles as a solo hoofer in front of big chorus lines; Esther, the watery equivalent leading a troupe of formation swimmers. Many key personnel from Eleanor's unit went on to work with Esther. Between 1935 and 1955 their stardom spanned and greatly influenced the blending of song, dance and story which made Metro the #1 producer of 'filmusicals'.

This is the second big number of the film, after 'Rap, Tap on Wood'. Musically it is more straightforward, eschewing heavy syncopation and setting up a steady rocking rhythm within which the sight gags, Porter's witty lyrics and the comic dance moves differentiate the three couples before bringing them together in a chorus line, genially acknowledging the variances in style and skill among the six. Roy del Ruth was recognized as a master of fluid camerawork. He tracks, pans and swirls through a mass of extras, never losing the thread of the story's intertwined relationships. The number exhibits the tremendous creativity and technical prowess of the early Sound cinema: in five or six years it had gone from pointing the lens at a stage in the first musical revues to an 'impossible' staging of action with diagetic music. It hurls the audience out of the stalls, through the proscenium into the action. But above all this was Eleanor Powell's triumph. It was not enough for her to be in a costly star vehicle shaped by others. With no experience of ensemble performing behind her on Broadway- and perhaps therefore no 'stagy' inhibitions- this 23 y.o. woman was choreographing routines as 'integrated' and dramatically a propos as any Gene Kelly would boast about 10-15 years later. She coached the four amateurs, marshaled the crowd artistes (with help from Dave Gould) and took her place easily among them, already proving in her second MGM picture that she was more than a showstopping solo tapper. And as always, all this toil and sweat was to lift the moviegoers' spirits.

I could watch this over and over! Tapping without musical accompaniment for most of the number, you can’t help but concentrate on Eleanor Powell’s footwork. Her trademark tapping, so close to the floor, seems impossible. Between this number and her dance in the finale of Broadway Melody of 1936, it is no wonder that she quickly became a big star for MGM.

I have been waiting for you to post this number! So many terrific moments. Eleanor Powell’s happy expressions throughout the number; Jimmy Stewart’s charming singing; Sid Silvers spinning Una Merkel in the air; EP’s dancing with Silvers (she must have had pretty good strength to whirl him around!); Frances Langford’s singing and Buddy Ebsen’s dancing; all of them tapping and doing heel clicks in the air (I am wondering what Stewart was “muttering” right after those clicks?); and the sweet ending, with Powell and Stewart strolling out the door. This is my favorite number from Born to Dance, thanks for posting it!

I'm completely delighted by Eleanor. She has no equal. After you watch this wonderful (and dangerous) dance, watch again. If you can take your eyes off her, you'll see the most enormous sets, featuring hundreds or stairs, fountains and hundreds of extras. Sometimes it's wonderful watching the extravagance and artistry of old Hollywood.

It's true! The set was so extravagant that this number couldn't be filmed on a soundstage. It was filmed at night on MGM's biggest backlot (Lot 3) with nearly 2,000 extras! We share an interesting story about this in our book.

I can see why Eleanor Powell was such a sensation, once this movie was released. She danced like no one had before her. I always watch her videos at least twice; first, to enjoy her amazing footwork, and then to see the joy on her face while she dances.
