Thanks for your comment. However are you equating the Catholic Church with the Roman Catholic Church? For many of us the two are not coterminus. Even official RC documents say the "Church ... SUBSISTS in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter" 4:22

Any Franciscans outside the Catholic Church are inherently disrespecting St. Francis' of Assisi's legacy.
@mikeryan3701
@mikeryan3701 3 ай бұрын
I don't know about disrespecting but I can't see how they can call themselves Franciscans if they don't belong to the sameChurch as St Francis and they do not believe many of his central beliefs. Semi-Franciscans, maybe, but not Franciscans. It's a bit like someone calling themselves a Marxist when they reject the idea of class conflict. The definition of a third order is “an association of the lay faithful who try to live the spirit of a religious order”. The “lay faithful” refers, of course, to members of the Catholic Church. That rules out people who are not members of the Catholic Church. “the spirit of a religious order” clearly includes all the beliefs of the Catholic Church. So that also rules out people who do not accept all the beliefs of the Catholic Church. The members of a third order must be practising Catholics. Clearly, non-Catholics will have no desire to take part in many of the devotional practices of a Catholic religious order. So when people outside the Catholic Church claim to belong to a third order, it is, by nature, a watered-down form of a real third order. Part of the discernment to become a member of a third order is a strong commitment to living the Catholic faith. That includes, for example, frequent attendance at Holy Mass and regular confession. A non-Catholic calling themselves a third order Franciscan is rather like someone who likes paddling in shallow water and calling themselves a swimmer. That is not to deny that non-Catholics might get some benefit from some aspects of Franciscan spirituality. It’s just not appropriate for them to call themselves Franciscans, of any kind. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4TddH6rm9B6qdk

@@mikeryan3701 Thanks for your lengthy and considered comments. There's not space to fully respond to all your point but... Francis died in 1226, long before the unhappy splits in the western church in the 16th Century. I realise that the RC church considers itself the sole inheritor of the earlier church. However, you need to understand that other churches also consider themselves heirs of that catholic and apostolic church. At every ordination or induction in the Church of England the candidates has to affirm: "The Church of England is part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church" We have all seven sacraments in our liturgy, and, although I realise Rome disputes this, we believe we have retained the Apostolic Succession. Furthermore, many free church also happily affirm in the creed, "We believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church" We all look to Francis as our common spiritual father. We shall obviously not agree but I hope we can respect each other as followers of Christ after the example of St Francis. Luke 9:49. 'John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he does not follow with us.” But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for whoever is not against you is for you.” Cancel Reply

Wonderful, definitely appeals to me. I am a retired Anglican priest, used to go on retreat to Monmouth with the sisters there and also many times to Caldey Island. I now minister in France to expats. Thank you for this.

Thank you! My city could benefit from the presence of Franciscan sisters. If I started a third order Franciscan group, could we wear habits in public, or would that be weird lol, and or not allowed?

Hi, not sure which 'your city' is. However, if interested do an internet search for Third Order. There is a European Province, which covers the UK. There is also an American Province. No, I am afraid the Third Order don't wear robes, but there is a professional cross which we wear.

Cain didn't use a spear. But more serious, the word family is functional, not biological.

Hi Daniel, Thanks for your comment. You may be right about Cain, but the Genesis is silent about the method. It just says Cain killed Abel. We don't know the method. However, i used a spear because it was easier to animate!! The word 'family' is indeed functional but it was biological first.

@Fr.David.TSSF-HorribleHomilies indeed... although in the NT, it no longer implies biological. That's why Jesus used referring to his disciples as brothers and sisters

Hi Carolyn,. Dr Who is not a Christian programme, so there are bound to be issues which make us uncomfortable. However, its does make us think, even if we want to come up with different answers. So, no, it doesn't worry me. We should never be afraid of questioning. In the end, all truth comes from God. 😊

Glad you enjoyed it. "Horrible Homilies" is an echo of the TV show "Horrible Histories". That show gives real history but in a light-hearted, humorous fashion. Inspired by St Francis, I try to do the same with faith. Besides, I rather like the alliteration of Horrible Homilies!

@Fr.David.TSSF-HorribleHomilies
@Fr.David.TSSF-HorribleHomilies 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Michael, Please watch these videos more carefully. 1 We are part of the Episcopal/Anglican branch of the church. Our priests are allowed to marry and intimacy is seen as a God-given gift. 2. As Anglicans we also have many female priests (watch the video) 3 However, I have also known priest who feel called to celibacy, not out of a fear of sex, but as a positive choice as a way of best serving God. Nonetheless you are absolutely right to warn of the dangers of misusing the gift of sex. We know only too well that priests, celibate or not, have abused others. This is a terrible crime and the church must guard always against those who would misuse their position.

Hi Khannea, thanks for taking the time to comment. 666: - presumably a reference to 1 Kings 10:14, where 666 is the weight of gold talents that king Solomon received in one year. Terrifying: - the experience that Moses had in the awesome presence of the God who transformed a bunch of impoverished slaves into a fully human community. Hebrews 12:21. Conclusion: SCP points to the abundant riches found in the awesome transforming presence of that Ultimate Reality!
