I grew up in Wolstanton and have known about that gravestone for as long as I can remember. It's something that my dad has talked about many times and he was very happy to read the article you mention and find out who the murderer actually was!

The pub was only built some 20 off years ago, I love on the estate from 1987 and remember seeing the miniature locks being un covered, they placed concrete beams over the site then tarmac for future excavation. Turnhurst Hall was in the position of those houses in the background. This is now Packmoor and the pub isn't earmarked for demolition, it stands on the corner of the entrance to the estate.
@PotterNo14 ай бұрын
I don't suppose you know of any photos of the excavations? I'd be fascinated to see them. The pub was demolished about 6 months ago now. There is a planning application in to build houses on the site. The developers have even started to move building materials in but they haven't had the full approval to begin building yet.

I have long been interested in this lost building, having lived in Chell in 1995, and having now moved to Stoke-on-Trent to live with my partner, and being fascinated by history and heritage my whole life!! Thank you for including the Cemetery, the site of which I have visited before. I enjoy your videos, please keep up the good work! ❤

No problem! I didn't grow up in the area so I don't remember the buildings when they were still standing. I had heard the rumors about the cemetery being located somewhere around the housing estates but I only recently found out where it actually was.

@IanFone Жыл бұрын
If it's the one I think you mean it is on the A34 just south of Congleton and it does have some interesting old tombs, albeit in a poor state. I drive past that church every week but, oddly, I've never made a video there.

Good ol' Burslem, my mum worked at the Royal Doulton factory that was there in the 80's. Many times I would come to meet her, getting off the bus from Hanley on my way home. A nice, unpretentious sort of place!

Wow, I'm surprised my parents never took us here. They were absolutely obsessed with healthy weekend activities, such as long walks or visiting ruins. We never went there. Actually we never went to Bidduplh Grange either, I think I nagged my mother into taking me there later in life!!! Such a shame that Henry 8th insisted on taking such terrible revenge on the church by attacking the Monasteries and Abbeys. We would have such a tremendous heritage, if he had just absorbed their estates into royal land.

I could see this from my bedroom window, growing up. Along with the coal trains rumbling by. A few times went there and walked up it and enjoyed the view. There is something really special about it. Left Staffs in 1986. Have lived mostly in the South since then. To tell the truth I don't miss it much, I spent 6 months living back with my mother who was in Uttoxeter then and that was a ruddy miserable business.

No, no no. This Duke of Sutherland had nothing to do with the Highland Clearances as he was descended from the Earls Gower of Trentham, later the Marquesses of Stafford (he was the 2nd Marquess) and was created Duke of Sutherland in 1833 by William IV.
@PotterNo12 жыл бұрын
George Leveson-Gower commissioned the mausoleum who was very much a central figure in the Highland Clearances. He was, as you say Marquess of Stafford and Earl Gower as well as Viscount Trentham before becoming Duke of Sutherland.
@jameswoolcock63022 жыл бұрын
@@PotterNo1 I should have said little to do with the Highland Clearances, which themselves have an extremely complicated history, not the simplified view of the modern day. As I understand it, on his marriage to Elizabeth Sutherland, Countess of Sutherland, George, gained the legal control, but not the ownership, of the Sutherland Estates. During the many phases that the so called clearances took place (which was actually around 110 years in all) George left the running of her Scottish land to Elizabeth, who took a great interest in them and their people. She in turn, left the day to day business in the hands of her factors, most notably Patrick Sellar. George, on inheriting the Bridgewater fortunes, made much of this available for the reorganisation of the Sutherland lands, so perhaps this is why you hold him so responsible. All in all, the Sutherland Clearances appear considerably more benign than many others, but that it not to say that they did not have their unfortunate consequences for many, many people. They are prominent by being probably the best recorded. But now, at last (!) to my point. To introduce your video by the single denigration of the yet to be Duke by reference to the Highland Clearances alone, whist totally ignoring the importance of him and his family in the life of this County, and of it's neighbours, the philanthropy of his descendants to the towns of the Potteries and beyond, and of their interests and investments in the Industrial Revolution is very lacking. Wokish I should say!

Visited today but could only view the ruin from the A518. The castle is on ‘private land’ and cannot be accessed. There are sometimes, I’m told, guided tours but how one would go about booking this isn’t really clear and there doesn’t appear to be anything online that I can see. There should be a right of way up to ancient monuments of this nature so everyone can enjoy their history rather than one extremely selfish individual who fancies himself as lord of the Manor.
@PeasantPrep3 жыл бұрын
The other problem with the tale is that muclestone was behind Yorkest lines, not somewhere a Lancastrian queen would want to be. The story is that she was disguised in poor country clothing but to get to this position from eccleshall castle where she had stayed in the run up, that would of brought her frighteningly close to capture. If it’s true then she was certainly not a woman to be messed with!
@PotterNo1 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree it feels a little far fetched but she was known to be a formidable character so I wouldn't put it past her.
