Hey guys, love seeing the love for Art. If nobody has mentioned it yet, one of the few amazing piano concert re-creations made by Zenph Studios was Tatum’s Piano Starts Here. If you get a chance to listen to the actual high-density CD or audio files with a great set of headphones, it will blow your minds.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this. These wouldn’t be the songs of Yussef I’d cited as examples, but I begrudgingly started to see and acknowledge that some of his songs lean smooth. Especially those featuring Venna; the tone of his saxophone is Kenny G-level cloying at times.

This was so enjoyable. I liked hearing the extended play of the tunes. And, bonus -- I actually got an idea I want to explore in my own playing when I listened to the Solar track you played.

I thought that the vast majority of jazz pianists look at Bill Evans as revolutionizing voicings and influencing virtually everyone coming afterwards. I certainly do. I think this applies to McCoy as well. Herbie is my favorite and he has cited Bill Evans and Ravel as being major influences on his harmonic concept.

On which video is the Brad comment, dudes? I wanna read it. I met him outside Smoke in NYC back in hmm, 2006 I think, he was playing with Peter Bernstein. It was snowing, he asked me for a light, we had a smoke, and chatted about Nick Drake. It was fucking cool TBH. I am sure Brad often remembers this special moment in his life too 😂

This works great for playing with bass/drums, but how about for solo playing? It doesn't seem as well-suited to solo playing unless you're playing with a very active left hand accompaniment (e.g. stride, bass lines, comping with fast changes). What do you guys think?

so many great village vanguard albums, but mine is probably Mccoy Tyner playing John Coltrane. a fantastic rendition of Naima to start the album.

Kind of Blue is great because it shows how popular a record can be, but musicians still don’t pay attention to properly listen to it. Evidence of this is the fact that All Blues doesn’t go to the IV chord. Yet musicians play the IV chord.

Major fail on calling out Stanley’s tone . I sat right in front of him when he was in Chick’s band and witnessed how much different he sounded than any other bassist . There’s a reason he was in such demand as soon as he hit the scene and his unbelievably expressive bass sound was why .

so many great points. im so guilty of the unicorn perfect day mentality. im also inspired now to dive into some songs that currently excite me instead of telling myself "some day i'll be able to play it". i gotta learn to make some of the dreary days easier on myself but still log in the minutes/hours no matter what. Thanks for the discussion guys!

Once I realized how Coltrane used his changes over a ii V I, (Fm F#7, B D7, G Bb7,Eb Eb), I concluded that he was using the same thing on Giant Step but starting on the V part of his changes. So Giant Steps is really long ii V I ‘s using Coltrane changes and short ii V I ‘s using regular changes. I substitute in reverse by playing B,,, E7,,, Eb,,, Ab7,,, G,,, C7,,, B,,, E7,,, Eb,,, Ab7,,, G,,, C7,,, B,,, E7,,, Eb,,, F#7,,,.

Its quite sad but at the same time inspiring to think that without the advent of KZbin, Rick Beato wouldn't even be a footnote in the annuls of KZbin influencers. Rick's rise to respected music guru is totally warranted due to the organic nature of his personality and musical desire to spread his knowledge. Great, inspiring stuff, indeed.

This is indeed one of the greatest Miles albums, but it wasn't the apogee of the 2nd 5tet. In 1967, Sorcerer was recorded in May and Nefertiti was recorded in June/July. But the recordings from the European Tour in October and November are on a completely other level - even though they are still exploring the concepts developed from 1964 through 1967 . It's available on "Live In Europe - The Bootleg Series Vol.1". For me, it's the apex of the 5tet. I kind of get the feeling that Peter and Adam have never really listened to it. Three months later, in January 1968, Miles recorded "Miles In The Sky" and he was off on another road, unfortunately abandoning a majority of the amazing language that the 2nd 5tet had developed.

The parallel development is trap music, where harmony and even melody are taking a backseat to groove and rhythm. 808s, snare fills, and hi hat rolls are the currency of the genre.

KIND OF BLUE as being Overhyped? Possibly overrated? You guys can't be serious 😁 By examining it, using so many categories, you assumed - that both of you are qualified to judge a masterpiece, done by the Gods of jazz, that has received undisputed acknowledgements for more than 60 years, by literally everyone that matters. If any of you happened not to like it, it's actually easier to understand since art & music are very subjective to each individual. However, if you try to build an opinion that placed this particular masterpiece as something overrated or overhyped, then, we may have some problems - because it may create confusion for future scholars or jazz lovers. Anyway, I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion and all, plus, this KZbin video was probably created for fun and entertainment purposes - but still... If you all answered Yes to any pointers above, I rest my case.

GALA - While I do not doubt that what Adam says about jazz no longer being at the local watering hole is true in most locales, I would like to happily quibble with that in regards to my specific locale, which is Louisville, Kentucky. I can go see live jazz at local watering holes on every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (two locations), Friday (two locations), and Saturday. It is an embarrassment of riches, funded by bourbon tourism. I don't drink bourbon, and I sort of think that the alcohol industry is fundamentally predatory, but man, that industry is accidentally doing me a real solid. I bet the Medici family was a bunch of morally vacuous robber barons, but since they bankrolled the Renaissance, I'm happy to cut them some slack. So too, bourbon tourism. But don't take my word for it, Adam and Peter. Come visit! I can tell you where some friendly jazz group would be happy to let you sit in six nights a week.

Wow, Peter, what a wonderful podcast this was! You have inspired me with all of your suggestions. One thing I plan to do to actualize your outline is to start a musical journal this year -- what I listen to, what I accomplish, what I need to focus on, impressions of anything musical, etc. I'm just a hobbyist musician but your suggestions really lit a fire under me for 2025. Thank you and Happy New Year to you and yours!

Ahh Thad and Mel! Many great memories. Like watching Pepper Adams take his bow after burning up a solo - by rising from his seat and bowing to the large white post that did duty holding up that end of the room, that he sat in front of. And the night that Thad called a very pregnant Dee Dee Bridgwater up from the audience to sing Bye Bye Blackbird. What times those were 🪷🌸🪷🌸☮️
