Being in the 82nd Airborne Division is the most important part of the military. Jumping was the easy part, after you jumped was when the real part of being Airborne began. Intensified Training began, being cold, wet, tired, lack of sleep, hungry, sleeping on the ground ( when you could get some rest ). That’s what being Airborne is really all about. It was great.

After Infantry Basic and AIT at Ft Benning, Jump School was a bit of a let down. I'd been told about how hard Jump School was supposed to be during Basic and AIT. Our Drill Sergeant was an ex-Black Hat. (He gave several of the guys from my platoon Blood-Wings after graduation. I decided not to take him up on that offer.) The only gig I ever got during Jump School was on the 250' tower jump when I couldn't hear the instructions from the Black Hat and didn't react correctly right away. The PT was a joke, except for the one run I ended up dropping out of on the last lap. I was sick as a dog and trying to hang, but someone dropped out right in front and it just sapped me of my will to continue. One of the Black Hats immediately jumped on the first guy who dropped out and started dogging him severely. I fully expected to be dogged as well, but he turned and took one look at me and just told me to get to the medic station. I hadn't said a word but I must have looked awful, because I was pretty sure that Black Hats checked their souls at the door and didn't have much sympathy for anyone, especially during PT. Among other things, my sinuses were all messed up and I couldn't breathe through my nose at all.

I worked at a hospital for 10 yrs and Rns and LPNS do the same thing, with training. Good Job Soldier. My son has to do in field if needed with no training either. So, don't worry. As long as you don't panic and you tune all others out go for it.

Yeah, I just graduated on Friday. This is honestly the easiest thing ever if you can overcome your fears, which you do quickly after the first jump. We didn't go off the 250 foot tower though.

@Nik3AllSt4r yeah it is a term used to describe guys who aren't airborne. Don't take it seriously we all just bust each others balls, it is one of the few things you can do in the military that is fun. it means Low Energy Ground Soldier it is pretty dumb but so is waking up at 0400 in the morning as if the gravity won't be around at noon.

@ssjrobert Hey brother, just google the rapid deployment force and the 18th AIRBORNE CORP.
@DumbHonkie113 жыл бұрын
@ssjrobert I have no doubt that the 501st covers the Pacific. But the 501st is not still part of the official rapid reaction force which is the 18th Airborne Corp. It really doesn't matter to me whether you are in the 82nd or 501st, I Iove all my AIRBORNE brothers. AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!!!!.
@DumbHonkie113 жыл бұрын
@ssjrobert You are wrong again,shithead. The U.S. ARMY's rapid reaction force is composed of the 18th Airborne Corp of which the 82nd is the first unit to be deployed then followed by the 101st,then the 10th Mountain, and finally 3rd ID. By the way nothing is wrong with being in the 501st. I just like the 82nd better.

@ssjrobert Today's jump school is child play,compared to the one I went thru in the old days. It was a 3 week of pure hell. We got up at 5 o'clock, did a lot of running and pt and double-timed everywhere. They gave us only about 6 minutes to finish chao at the mess hall. In the evening, we had to be ready for barracks inspections. We went to bed around 1 o'clock,and the black hats woke us up around 3 o'clock and made us do pt and run. An asshole like you wouldn't have lasted a day.
@DumbHonkie113 жыл бұрын
@ssjrobert The difference betwween the 82nd and the other AIRBORNE units is big, because unlike the other AIRBORNE outfits the 82nd is the first unit of the RAPID REACTION FORCES.to go. This is the reason why the 82nd is ready to go anywhere in the world within 18 hours of notification. One brigade of the 82nd is on a stand-by alert all the time. The 82nd trains a lot harder than the other units,because of this special duty. To me you are a sorry excuse for being airborne. go fuck yourself.

@123nypd1 The jump school does only one thing, teaching you how to jump out of a plane,nothing more. If you are physically in good shape and have no fear of heights,then you will not have any problem passing it. The hardest part of being a paratrooper comes when you are assigned to an Airborne unit, specially the 82nd Airborne. The washout rate of new jump school graduates in an Airborne unit is very high. If you don't meet it's standards, you will be sent to a leg unit very fast.
@DumbHonkie113 жыл бұрын
@123nypd1 Come on, go Airborne you can do it. You will not regret it.
@DumbHonkie113 жыл бұрын
The Parachute(Airborne) Infantry Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne are extremely well trained in raid,ambush,urban warfare, airfield seizure tactics and many more.. Most of the 82nd Airborne(Parachute) Infantry Paratroopers are also Ranger-qualified and or Pathfinder-qualified and or sniper-qualified and or Air Assault-qualified and many more. In capabilities these 82nd Airborne(Parachute) Infantry Paratroopers are just below the Rangers but way above the marine infantrymen.
@DumbHonkie113 жыл бұрын
@DumbHonkie1 The qualitis of jump school traninees are lot higher than those of the marine recruits at the boot camp because the Airborne trainees are not like the raw recruits at the marine boot camp. These Airborne trainees already went thru basic and AIT training and among them you will also find a lot of Special Forces, Ranger, Seals, marine recon trainees. Even so the dropout rate at the jump school is 28% compared to the very low dropout rate of 11.7% at the marine boot camp.
@DumbHonkie113 жыл бұрын
When I went to the jump school, there were 4 recon marines and two of the marines couldn't pass it. One marine couldn't keep up with the runs and another marine froze at the door of an airplane.According to the DoD statistics, the dropout rate at the marine boot camp is 11.7%(no kidding, almost anybody can be a marine!!!) and according to the jump school, the dropout rate is about 28%. So becoming a Paratrooper is a lot harder than becoming a marine.
