Laying on the brakes hard and heavy until your vehicle comes to a halt is the correct first try. This will bring most every car to a halt.

I took pictures of my dog's injuries from pitbull attack while riding in freezing weather in the back of our farm truck. As a nurse, I knew the injuries had to be documented. We won our case against the pitbull owners mainly because of my documentation by pictures.
