My Dad told me about this song. He used to sing it. Dad passed away 3 years ago aged 91. Every time I listen to it, I get such happy memories of just listening to him singing along to Bobby Gentry.

In my opinion Billie Joe and his girlfriend threw a baby of the bridge. I think he committed suicide because he had been passing as white and was outed by the baby’s appearance. This would have caused the white community to reject him for being black and the black community to reject him for turning his back on them. He would have been ostracized by both sides. The movie was a joke. I loved this song from the first time I heard it.
