Nifty solution. Can you still easily access the belt afterwards, should it fail at some point, like because the rubber dries out?

Beautifully done! I have a similar device in my ship SEABEX ONE. Only - in my case the radar drive consists of a butchered servo, and the drive is direct. One gear on the servo drive, two on the axes of the radar antennas. Rotation speed adjustable via a spindle trimmer.

Hi Patrick. I'm trying to build pretty much this exact cam for a model engine my grandfather made in the 40's or 50's. It is mostly complete but is sadly missing the camshaft with the crossed helical gear. I have been researching on how to do this myself (I have a mill and a lathe etc) and if there is anything you can share I'd be grateful, regards

How can you reverse those engines so quick like that without bringing the steam pressure down first? (Like what we see in the Titanic film)
@Shipwright1918
@Shipwright1918 Жыл бұрын
It's really best to shut off steam first, but with a smaller engine it's less of a jolt than with the 4-story tall monsters in the Titanic, so you can get away with it. In this context it's what's called a "crash stop" so you need to reverse as quickly as possible.

@@Shipwright1918 Wow okay, makes sense now. Thank you for replying and answering my question that I’ve had in the back of my head for ages now. :)

@@ryantimm9748 Crash stops were possible on the Olympic Class liners but were only done in an absolute emergency since that’s a lot of wear on your engines and running gear. It also puts wear on the propellers since suddenly going from full ahead to full astern causes a lot of water cavitation around the props which translates to a lot of vibration. Olympic apparently performed a crash stop during the incident where she accidentally rammed and sank the Nantucket light ship. Titanic performed a crash stop test during her sea trials and I assume the other two Olympic Class liners did the same. It’s also worth noting that when Titanic was leaving Southampton, her wake broke the moorings of the liner SS New York. Captain Smith had the engines on Titanic quickly thrown into reverse to prevent the New York from being sucked into Titanic’s side, narrowly avoiding an early end to the voyage. I assume that would have been done as a crash stop type maneuver.

Simply amazing, Mr Matthew, I too am building this tug boat. however I can find little in the way of plans. Is there any chance of you sharing some of the intricacies on how you went about to get some of the systems going, ie. the radars , the spotlights, running lights and their hook ups. Greatly appreciated. Again , fantastic job.

Mr. Matthews, are you the same Patrick Matthews, the author of "Mahogany in Scale" that was published in 2007? That book was the No.1 motivation for me to build a RC mahogany runabout of my own many years later. I rediscovered the book just a few days ago, and it suddenly hit me: It's gotta be the same guy! If you're interested, you can see my mahogany boat here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGnbYqClg5iens0. Thanks for writing that book!!!

Beautiful Fairplay Tug. Can these be seen in the Port of Hamburg? Unfortunately, probably as it is just a floating and manoeuvrabilty test in the garden jacuzzi, the acuity of the video is a bit fuzzy and lacking visibility of details. But this model looks meticulously built. Good job. Is this a build from scratch or is there a kit of this model available?
