These helicopters were a part of my childhood growing up in Ulster. Noisy buggers, you could hear them two miles away

I too was lucky to live close to RAF Stradishall whilst being in the ATC in the 60's. No1 navigation School. I managed to amass over 300hrs on Varsity's and Dominies and was taught how astral navigate by the time i was 15. I flew to the US in 1988 in a US ANG KC135 tanker which still uses Astral Navigation. I was allowed to try my hand at it and was surprised how quick it came back to me after all those years. The Pig was a lovely aircraft.

Never, ever gets old. That signature turbine squeals, and then that roar of the Olympus engines. What a plane and what a creation. I miss you, Concorde. You will never be forgotten.

Flew in these several times from RAF Oakington Cambridge as a young teenager in the Air Cadets circa 1968, a wonderful experience which I will never forget. As a training aircraft we did asymmetric approaches, single engine ops, steep turns and stalls, loved every minute, what an amazing aeroplane.
@clive3733 жыл бұрын
I too flew in them at Oakington. I was in 204 sqdn ATC. That was my first ever flight. I went on to get a PPL, but the best flying I ever did was 6500 ft on my hang glider...

@@clive373 Thats interesting Clive, i was 1371 sqn air cadets. Flew in Chipmunks, Sedberg gliders, English Electric Canbera at RAF Laarbruch Germany summer camp,,,amongst others. I too got my ppl and worked for CAA/NATS in Air Traffic Control for 40 years. Air Cadets can really give a young person a leg up toward a career, a good thing to have on your CV..

I only got a cockpit tour of one in the hangar at RAF Newton in 1970 when we were on AEF in the Chipmunks. I noticed bits of tape with writing on stuck on the Rev counters at slightly different values. We were just told that the engines gave different power in the cruise and the tape just saved pilots the trouble of working it out for themselves. Very high tech way of syncing the engines 😉

@@MrSamFerguson from age 8 I wanted to be a pilot, by about 10 I wanted to be a lightning pilot! That flight in the varsity was perfect in as much as it was a day of towering cumulus, we flew past majestic clouds, then through them, and out again. It allowed me to sense how fast we were going. It must have been a nav exersise, we did a touch and go at Leconfield, and somewhere else. The RAF broke my heart so I joined the met office. There I blagged a few chipmunk rides, a three hour x country in a Hastings, and twice in a Canberra. We were intercepted by Lightnings over the N Sea on the first trip, on the second we lost our radio, so ended up following a chase plane, which dived pretty much vertically through cloud at 9000ft, when we broke cloud we had lost him, and our way. I was a staff cadet at 643 GS RAF Hemswell, which was in the distance, I knew we were, and was able to direct the pilot to follow the A15, back to Scampton. Later I worked for blue circle cement in Africa, and got my PPL, heading towards the flying instructor, 700 hrs then CPL etc when other stuff happened. Glad I did it though, something you can never loose! Many thanks for the ATC stuff, I was always very impressed with ATC, except for Upper Heyford, who once got me lost. Told me I had left their airspace when I hadn't....

Quite a few cobwebs before it actually started ! Draining the lower cylinders with the plugs out before starting my have helped somewhat. One story about the Varsity is that an RAF mechanic stole one and flew it to France where I believe it was crash landed !
@Firebrand55 Жыл бұрын
True. LAC Nanik Agnani, a frustrated would-be pilot, stole one from RAF Thorney Island, 25th April, 1955. He crashed on the village of Onnaing, killing himself, three on the ground and injuring three others

Brilliant chopper for either front line troop deployment or supplying troops with various support. They should have continued the workhorse which meant so much for the ground troops.........

I preferred flying in a Wessex rather than Puma, the Pilots were inclined to be more careful with a Wessex. My greatest memory was flying across Hong Kong harbour at dusk with all the doors open, fantastic sight...

I was enjoying an air experience flight in one of these as an air cadet when one of the engines packed up over the Irish Sea. One of the trainee navigators came along with a parachute for me and basic instructions like "Pull that." The Master Pilot landed at RAF St Mawgan on the one good engine.

My word...brings back memories. I so remember several Varsity in transit at St. Mawgan (MDA Flt) in early 70's I was always on starter crew with the trolley acc and enjoyed the smokescreen from those slider valve engines...low emissions? Mostly used for nav training I think. The Viper engined Dominies also frequented St.M for the same purpose. (Like HS 125)

I "ran up" Varsity and Valetta aircraft along with the Avro Anson at Bishops Court N Ireland (early 1950s ) I dont remember them being "smokey" but of course they were in daily use. They were kitted out for navigator training. I was an engine fitter and and was always amazed that only four bolts held those huge radial engines in situ "they were pretty big bolts !!!"

I have quite a few hours in 604 when she was sent as a new airframe to boost the numbers of 78 Sqn at RAF Khormaksar in Aden. She got painted in the normal camouflage colours, but using what maybe was distemper paint than quick quickly started to wear off! Thereby browny greeny yellow!!
