It is truly unfortunate that Sam has passed a while ago. But this guy is a true beast at this instrument!

I have the most extensive range (relative to instrument) of any of the brass at my school on literally any trombone, baritone, or euphonium I play. I can play higher than some of the trumpets even when I'm playing my marching euph and they have their trumpet.

The man wrote a freaking book dedicated to the advancement of brass fundamentals (especially tone). I think he knows what he is doing. Plus, he has been teaching and performing longer than the average college student has been alive.

@PhanRegSop Flutter-tonguing isn't too fun on marching euph. I had to do it in last year's marching show in my high school band. It's wasn't hard, nor did it sound bad, but it was weird for some reason.

it's the shitty mic in the camera folks, man is an absolute monster of a player with a gorgeous tone, and well you can at least hear his technical ability and range on this crappy recording. Just a ridiculous player, and had influenced countless brass players.

Why are there so many negative comments toward Sam Pilafian...? Let's hear you play better/teach better. Look the guy up.

If you're saying Sam isn't worth listening to, you're out of your mind. This is him checking stuff out. He's an amazing player with gorgeous sound and technique. Yeah Pat Sheridan is just as amazing, but it's like saying you're a ford or chevy guy. Better to say these two guys are great.

Sal is the man, and a great musician too. Haha. He is good people, and an amazing trumpet player that I think, put Poncho on the map with his solos. When are we going to hear "Sal Cracchiolo and His Big Band" tour the world.

His sound doesn't have a lot of "core", but that's his sound. Like or don't, I dig it. After hundreds of years of pretty much the same standard for proper trombone tone, some change is cool. I play bass for instance, which has changed a LOT over it's short existance for the better.

Could you hear how he started resonating the low tones better as he warmed up to the reworked horn? searching for that sweet spot. I busk a tuba for a living and enjoy listening to this guy fart around more than a regular composition.Interesting how he's streching it out , testing it's limits like a test pilot.
