Update 7/21/22 Hello Rich Last month here on your inventRight response to my post you asked me to DM you in order to definitely 'set me up'. That you honestly wanted different thoughts, perspectives, etc… I did so but I did not get a response from you. I am sure that you must be very busy. I’d love the opportunity to have you follow through. Do you honestly want different thoughts and perspectives on Hasbro’s product evaluation, acquisition development via Hasbro Spark really works? I would love the opportunity to see your operations and your vetting process. I think that it would be great to have an outsider's perspective and if there's issues, have real conversation on how to work towards making the operation better as a whole. DM me.

'Very little fear and lots of resilience!' Great advice for life! I watch very few items twice but this is so delightful - both industry advice and life advice. Yes, Ben did say 'magical' and he makes me smile. Anton and Ben both stress it is relationships and that nurturing is where memories are made. The stories about the learning curves are delightful. Diversity of thought in a rock band! Wow! We need more leaders in the world like this.

Excellent video, there was insane amounts of information. Here are the new things I learned: When pitching to a company, what is the best and cheapest way to protect your idea? Inventors become absorbed in their idea You will only get help if the person likes and trusts you. Make sure you are working with the right person in the first place. Family liking your invention is not proof you have a good idea Because they will be biased. When you are ready to go to your family ask them: I have someone who made this and they want to work with me. What are your thoughts? Patents Protection Options: NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) A lawyer Provisional Patent Application: A document saying an invention is yours, only works for 12 months Intellectual Property: Patents: protect the functionality of something Trademarks: protect the origin of goods or services Copyright: protects an artistic something once it’s encased in a tangible medium Trade Secrets: a secret that has value A royalty is a very good way to get money because it’s treated as long term capital gains Don't’ have one idea and concentrate your whole life on that. Come up with lots of things and make it a part of who you are.

This session had tons of great information and I loved all the examples to explain everything! Here are my notes for this session in case it's helpful to someone else. PEOPLE Inventor: The product developers Inventor Relations: Someone to travel around the world and be the connector between inventors and people in their companies. Can explain exactly what their company needs to inventors. Brand Team: They grow the revenue of a specific brand within a toy company. How much products did buyers buy last year vs what we developed and what was the sell through rate of those products once they were on shelves? Design Team: Graphic Design Team, Illustrators, Photographers, Logo Designers, Style Guides, Packaging Designers, etc. PRODUCTS A good product is something that ceases the craze of the moment or is a bit ahead of it’s time but not too much TV Moment: It is when you can express to the consumer the excitement, the experience, what it’s like to play with that item. Traditionally on Television or Social Media Organized Play: You make a whole world of marketing around your product. Tournaments, Competitions, Narrators etc. Product Development Process (from prototype to shelf) Understand the Concept Market Research and Market Screening to see if this product is going to work Concept Development and Feasibility aka the SWOT analysis The product development itself Marketing and Commercialization IP: When you take an idea and create a band with it Once you a company likes your offer you want to get into a contract Contracts: What is being licensed? Terms of actual agreement Minimum Guarantees Protection

Thank you so much to the CHITAG team for this wonderful video. It is truly a gold mine of information and was extremely fun to watch! These are my notes if anyone finds this helpful. the toy industry matters because it reassures children in uncertain times in the first three quarters of this year, toy sales were up 19% "never cost reduce the magic" - neil from mattel why should little girls have more than one barbie doll?: Imagine you have a pie, with different slices of barbie. There are roller skates barbie and totally hair barbie and bald barbie. Then the kids will want roller skates barbie because she lights up and she'll want bald barbie because she is a stoic. It is important that the little girls could say WHY they needed those barbies. If you have great stories and great toys it will be a huge success Why is barbie special? She is a girl who can be anything she wants to be Advise to Inventors Whatever you bring in, make sure that it’s fun, it’s gotta be magic, it's gotta bring smiles to people's faces. It has to be manufacturable, it’s gotta be simple enough that a child understands it when they see it. DO NOT GET DISAPPOINTED IF YOU GET TURNED DOWN because what doesn’t work today, might work tomorrow. Always stick with what you believe in. Does it have a real play pattern that will last for a long long time. Is it a real new invention? At least 50% of the products mattel sold were new! Tell the companies and brokers the full invention. Don’t be scared of them stealing your idea.

I was a Hot Wheels designer from 1983-2014 and often got to present directly to Tom, Neil and Jill. They are all terrific, friendly people who really made working at Mattel special. This is a great video which does them justice, showing them as creative, fun loving, PEOPLE people. Love 'em all!

As a recent graduate, this was easily the most helpful panel in regards to questions I had abut the industry and how to how to best improve my portfolio, as well as affirming many of my own design practices I have learned in school. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the answers. Thank you all and feel free to reach out if I haven't already!
