My opinion is thus: The overarching story is good, but heavily bogged down by its weaker sections. Every time the focus shifts back to Cortana's growing rampancy and Chief's attempts to walk the tightrope of comforting her while also trying to wrangle her fracturing mind to accomplish the mission, it is at its best. I STRONGLY feel that while the Prometheans are a good addition(they serve as an excellent antithesis to the Flood, being purely synthetic while the Flood are pure biological), the Didact should have either been an actual boss fight or saved for another game. The gameplay is mostly fine. It's Halo, with some other stuff added in. The QTE's were aggravating and unnecessary. I get they were trying harder to put us in Chief's shoes, but the games have never struggled with that. My biggest complaint is the pacing. We spend 3.5 missions before we even meet another human, then leave the Infinity behind 1.5 missions later. It feels like there's an entire mission or two just.... missing. Replaced by the random mid-mission sidequest to go talk to the Librarian. It feels like it opens with a crawl, then sprints through like 3 missions, then slows back to a crawl again. The new characters were all good additions, and they served their roles well. Del Rio is perfect. He's a bureaucrat entrusted with the Infinity as a political move, who ONI knew was going to screw up and get the boot so they installed Lasky on board as first officer as their ACTUAL choice to command the Infinity. They just couldn't have predicted how MONUMENTALLY he would have screwed the pooch. Lasky is a competent commander who survived because of Chief early in the war and now reveres him. When Chief speaks, Lasky listens close. I know a lot of people don't like Palmer, but I don't get the hate. Her one notable line is to treat Chief rather casually, and people act like that means she doesn't care about Chief and the legends surrounding him. Yet later we see this is not true because Del Rio looks right at her, points at Chief and says "Arrest him" and she barely moves. She shifts uncomfortably in place but she looks TERRIFIED. So all she's guilty of is playing it cool when she meets the man who I HAVE to imagine is kind of her hero. Didact feels like he was misused. Should have been a proper boss fight, or saved for a later title. I also think it would have been cool if a squad or two of S-IV's mutinied and left with Chief when he left the Infinity. Literally just "Um, no, that's THE Master Chief. If he says there's something important here that needs doing, we're staying here and doing it." Overall the skeleton of something good is here, but there's a lot of gaps and drudgery and missed opportunities. It's enjoyable, but a far cry from Halo's best.
