People twisting themselves into knots trying to make it not his because they don't like it, when there is like a 99.99% chance it is something he wrote if you just view the facts without bias.

As if any other composer before and since Chopin can create something like this... Of course it is him.. When you play it when you hear you just know it. We can fly helicopters on Mars; but humanity is unable create a 30 seconds piece without Chopin.

I far prefer this to the much more popular second sonata whose ubiquity in the repertoire I feel, owes much to the powerful espousal of Vladimir Horowitz. The first sonata has been brilliantly performed and recorded by Alexis Weissenberg.

And that's why he probably didn't publish it. This is the same composer who deemed Fantaise Impromptu, his E minor waltz, E minor Nocturne, etc not worthy of publishing for one reason or another. It's not bad by any means, but definitely not world class either, which is fine. As far as style goes, there's enough indications of Chopin's style that it's fair to assume it belongs to him. Nearly every stylistic and harmonic writing in this piece can easily be found in many of his other pieces.

This is a rehash, word for word, of why some people think Bach didn't write Toccata and Fugue in D minor. It's not "sophisticated" enough. Even though handwriting analysis has shown its same way Chopin wrote treble and bass clefs and noteheads and beams. Now, you've got to convince people this person was an expert at forgery, but couldn't be bothered to make the music itself more "elegant". And why wouldn't this person actually finish the piece? They could publish it and actually make money from it! The only logical explanation is that Chopin himself sketched an idea and failed to refine it. Everything else is a conspiracy theory at this point.

Got recommended a video with 20 views and spat my water laughing after 1 second, when I hear "Edvard Grieg" with a picture of Albert Einstein. Cute video, but here is my 2 cents: the background music you put in between the showcased pieces, is a bit confusing and distracting, as you're talking about a piece, with a different one playing in the background.

I think that it does belong to Chopin. It has the style of his waltzes. I don't believe it's bad...If you watch a performance of it by, say, Kassia(one of the best pianists on KZbin, in my opinion), you'd know that it belongs to Chopin. In my belief, Waltz in A Minor DOES belong to Chopin. If you want to disagree, be my guest.

Chopin had a lot of his pieces burnt after his death. It isn't improbable that amongst these pieces we would have seen similar 'imperfect' pieces like this one. Point being, Chopin was a perfectionist who only wanted to share the peak of his compositions and not the mediocre ones (mediocre by chopin standards ofc). We might never know.

But is there any other composer or student who could convincingly write in that style back then? I never heard it. For me that is the breaking point. Sure, this sounds only 75% like Chopin. But any other composer from that time sounds only 50% like Chopin. This, plus his handwriting, makes it likely Chopin.

While the second sonata seems to be preferred generally, I love the first sonata even more. It took me years to get my head around it, but I kept being drawn back to it. At least those who hear his second sonata know that this exists because his second sonata is, well, his second.

That's soo trueee.... I wouldn't even think that was his if it weren't for the fact that it was published alongside the other by THE MAN himself... and the fact that others in the set (No. 18 and 22) also sound uncharacteristic of Chopin's "usual style" found in his more extended works.. (works above the length of 7 mins ish )

I read a story about Beethoven's 10th. They say that he grabbed a piece of paper and wrote the first movement (you can hear it on YT) and he never got the chance to work further on it. The rawness of the new waltz may imply the same.

I think the likelihood of this being a piece written by someone else, in Chopin's distinctive style, and then copied down by Chopin himself is way less likely than it just being an unfinished sketch by the man himself. He was only human, it's not like every single musical idea he ever produced became a fully formed piece of music. I have to agree that when I first heard the piece I thought it sounded a little clumsy. But after hearing several interpretations my conclusion is that many performances, including Lang Lang's, attempt to stretch the piece into a full ~ minute and a half with excessive use of rubarto. It makes the dissonant run near the beginning sound clunky. Compare to a performance like, for example, Annique Gottler's (watch/lk6bsVHADCg), which clocks in at 30 seconds, and it sounds a lot less clumsy - it gives the impression of an introduction to a larger piece rather than an entire work. The dissonant run is no longer the high point of the performance, instead it seems like the exposition of some material that might have been developed, had the piece been finished. I think Occam's razor applies in this case - the number of assumptions required to explain how this could have been written by somebody else are in my opinion much greater than the number of assumptions required to justify this being written by Chopin.
@mstalcupАй бұрын
I am convinced that Chopin wrote this. The fragment was being analyzed for months before the news of the discovery appeared. Analysis of the way he made the musical symbols, the ink and paper used, and the rest of the provenance supports that Chopin is the composer. Chopin frequently made preliminary drafts and revised his works and destroyed much of what he wrote down. Many works of his were cataloged during his life and have either been destroyed or lost since. There is no reason to assume that all of his ideas would be on par with his most celebrated works. This newly-found fragment of a composition by Chopin may have been snatched by someone as a souvenir, which would explain the lack of a signature or title in Chopin's handwriting. The single pickup note written after the double bar line in the manuscript indicates that this music is incomplete.

I've played Chopin all my life, and recognized this as his the first time I heard it. I've since downloaded the music. It's pretty easy, and really very beautiful. It does need another section, and I'm glad some people are trying to complete it.

@@steveneardley7541 I am in the same situation. As a pastiche in the style of a Chopin mazurka, I have composed a second section that repeats and returns to the first theme, i.e. rounded binary form.

If the music is actually in Chopin's handwriting, then it is quite probably his music, be it a fragment or complete, one way or another|; not every single piece has to be a masterpiece. Chopin and other composers also wrote music which are not precisely masterpieces!
