Cocolithophores need Caco3 to build their cocoliths and high salinity to survive which is readily available in marine env and hence restricted to marine env while diatoms can survive in freshwater as well marine and their frustule are made up of silica

When oceans were high in O18 means excess O16 is evaporated first which is lighter and hence represents warm climate. Lower ratio represents cold climate
