I think this song means . I had the pleasure of knowing a man named Bojangles . He would dance for anyone who cared to watch , wearing worn out shoes , silver hair , a ragged shirt , and baggy pants . His feet would move in the old soft shoe , leaping high into the air before gently touching down .his name was Mr.Bojangles , and he danced with such grace . I first met him in a cell in New Orleans when I was feeling low . He seemed wise beyond his years as he spoke about life and laughed heartily he would slap his leg then begin to dance , his movements filling the small space . He had away of clicking his heels letting out a laugh , and shaking his clothes with joy . Mr.Bojangles truly loved to dance . We danced together at minstrel shows and country fairs all across the South . We would reminisce about fifteen years he spent traveling with his faithful dog , who had since passed away . Even after two decades , he still mourned his beloved companion . Now he spends his days dancing in honky-tonk for drinks and tips , but mostly behind country bars due to his to a good drink . He shared with his love for life and bringing joy to others . In his younger days he traveled the world with his loyal dog by his side . Despite the passage of time and the loss of his companion . Mr.Bojangles continues to dance and spread happiness wherever he goes . It's a reminder that while we may grow old , the spirit of joy and love can keep us young at heart . Mr.Bojangles

I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you In worn out shoes With silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants The old soft shoe He jumped so high Jumped so high Then he'd lightly touch down Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Dance I met him in a cell in New Orleans, I was Down and out He looked to me to be the eyes of age As he spoke right out He talked of life Talked of life He laughed, slapped his leg instead He said the name Bojangles and he danced a lick Across the cell He grabbed his pants for a better stance Ooh, he jumped so high He clicked his heels He let go a laugh He let go a laugh Shook back his clothes all around Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Dance We danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs Throughout the south We spoke in tears of fifteen years How his dog and him They travelled about His dog up and died He up and died After twenty years he still grieves They said I dance now at every chance and honky tonks For drinks and tips But most the time I spend behind these county bars 'Cause I drinks a bit He shook his head and as he shook his head I heard someone ask please Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Dance

I saw Ben Vereen perform this song in Fosse’…the last night of a multi year off Broadway run. As he sang and did the “old soft shoe”, an Asian man danced around him, in the shadows, as if it was Mr Bojangles younger spirit dancing around….you can see it here on KZbin . It was one of the most beautiful, heartfelt performances I have ever seen, and my eyes water up just a little while typing this, and remembering the performance in my mind’s theater. Written by Jerry Jeff Walker after being arrested for vagrancy while street performing in New Orleans. I truly believe he met the real “Bojangles” while in lock up.

Most of the people in this comment section are reminiscing of old times, I maybe only 18 but this song means a lot to me. Used to listen to this on the radio with my dad, he passed when I was 15. Lots of these old songs take me back and I hope to share songs like these with my kids someday.

Love the vibes of a time of self discovery, & people helping one another, & standing up for what they believed in! What a transitional time for America! However, it is sad to remember so many great, & phenomenal singers, & artists we lost along the way, & the young who were killed & wounded in Vietnam. America did survive & became stronger through the good & bad.

@jaimehammer899 wrote - "The dog up and died. After 20 years, he still grieves".........and that's when my tears start. Same for me - I lost my dog, my faithful buddy/companion and it took me 30 years to get another dog! Now in my mid 70's I have a wonderful dog and I just hope I can outlast him as I'd hate to leave him alone. He's five now - please Lord.

"After 20 years he still grieves"...As a kid I didn't really understand that line. After being a Carnie for 30 years, 13 of them with my dog Tana as my co-pilot and sole companion, I not only understand that line, I live it. Tana died awhile back, and I'll never be the same. Losing him broke me...

This is rock. I don't remember who gave me this album. American Pie was oerplayed, but worth it. When I first played the album on my Panasonic stereo combo 8-track player and Vincent came on, well once again, the music changed my life.
