Fantastic video. Thanks! How do you correct a Reed that has been accidentally left in water too long and now fully opens up at the sides such that the two pieces of cane are basically parallel planes? Thanks!

Why? I can't help but watch every short video! I'm knot a musician, but I've spent multiple thousands of USD's on amps, guitars, cant play a song. That was years back. Recently a ABS recorder; tenor in C, has drawn me to again, the quest. Your very much as I was, so far as these videos are concerned. That said, success is in the pursuit, and occasionally, joyfully achieved.

Yes, records save hours, frustration, and give us a history that can't be ignored. My art was firearms ammo reloading.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmHRlYqsequAnpI I have some advanced techniques to speed up the process. I noticed your profiler leaves a heart. Is it all in the center? Must you blend in the sides? The elliptical profiler blends the center to the side of the reed very well. Eliminates thinning the sides of the reed. It is also adjustable.

Baking soda, ultrasonic cleaner distilled water and a tooth brush. I do use hot water (as hot as you can stand)only for the insides of a reed. Water pick if you have one.

Below my custom made reed scoring machine and my technique for making a barrel using an automated pliers. I also have a machine for cutting the wires to length and a profiler which makes an excellent center to side profile which no other profiling machine can do well except for expensive double profilers. The movement of my barrel is the inverse of the perfect reed form. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXavi3yGnt5pZ6M kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIq2YoOmfa-IbZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqbZk6pmg7l5m8k profiling

Thank you for crowing the reeds, then describing in words the "definition" of that crow characteristics and then a quick and easy fix that most people could have a good chance at executing correctly. I think this will be helpful in training my ear to understand the reed problems and no nonsense fixes.

Wonderful series, well done! Lots of good information and content, as well as a very cinematic presentation! (Multiple camera angles were a win!) I feel like there need to be more bassoonist who make tutorials of their process that are also enjoyable to watch! Thank you for this!

Hi Tom, thanks for the great video. You had mentioned silica particles in cane which dulls your knives. I hadn't heard about silica in cane before and am very interested. Can you fill me in?

Google Arundo Donax silica and you will find a host of references with details. Happy hunting!

Is there a correlation with reed thickness and ease of vibrato? Thanks
@TomHardyBassoon6 жыл бұрын
Thickness is relative! But a FLEXIBLE and responsive reed is going to be easier to allow vibrato as opposed to one that takes a lot of air pressure just to speak at all!

What profile measurements do you prefer to use on your rieger?
@TomHardyBassoon6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Hans. Yes, my preferred measurements change depending on the cane and when I have sharpened my blade! But 2.5 mm from the centre fold I like it to be around .90mm rather than very thick. I like there to be enough cane near the tip that my tipper has something to do but not so much that the tipper will leave a line (where their is too much cane half way back on the profile). I definitely haven't arrived at definitive measurements but personally prefer quite light reeds.

could i use a knife instead of a file
@Tomhardybassoonreeds7 жыл бұрын
yes Rhys you could use a knife. On the whole using a sharp knife can brighten the sound of a dull reed and using wet and dry paper or a file is a quicker way of making a buzzy reed less wild. I use all sorts of tools and will be doing more videos this new year, so interested to hear what problems you want to solve and how I can help

Thank you for the video series. I have seeing in other videos of your that you have two dial indicator micrometers. However, you never show the use of them in your video tutorials. Is it because you prefer to work with the lamp than the dial indicator micrometer? A video on how to use the dial indicator micrometer for consistency would be helpful.

The cane is dry when you profile?
@TomHardyBassoon7 жыл бұрын
Definitely soaked for at least 15 minutes in warm water. But it really depends on your machine! The Rieger one works better with wet cane but other machines I have had are fine with it dry.

I've started playing bassoon last September and expressed interest in getting reed blanks. I don't have a machine to finish it. How would you hand finish a reed?
@Tomhardybassoonreeds8 жыл бұрын
+jose 318 there are many videos on finishing reeds by hand. Try www.steesbassoon.com for a start and just google as there are many players who have shared using files and knives to finish without machines.

I have had great success keeping reeds playing well by occasionally soaking them in hydrogen peroxide until the reed tube stops foaming. The result is a reed with a lot of resistance.The temptation is to scrape away. DON'T TOUCH IT. It will recover if just played in a bit. I don't know if others have tried this but I will say I once got half a season in a professional orchestra on one reed using this technique. I'm retired now and only play for fun. Love your videos by the way, very helpful.
@TomHardyBassoon9 жыл бұрын
+Jon Busch Great Jon! Yes, I have tried that and also have an ultrasonic cleaner too. But I find both these make an immediate impact which I am not so sure about in the long term - it's the elasticity in the cane that we are trying to preserve and both hydrogen peroxide and the ultrasonic seem to take more flexibility out of the cane. But whatever works for you! Happy Blowing.
