Hey thanks for commenting. As far as the title, I’ll eventually be doing a comparison to my Two-Rock TS1, considered by many one of the best ODS inspired amps. I was surprised how close the Mk III actually gets.

Let’s look at the common features between the amps. A Fender-ish clean channel with mid and gain boosts, multiple EQ shifts, and a second gain stage placed AFTER the tone stack (a particularly unique feature of these two specific amps at the time). But the most significant thing they had in common was that they were designed during the same period by two guys who were practically neighbors out in California. Alexander Dumble and Randall Smith, along with Mike Soldano, Bob Bradshaw, John Suhr, and others in the area, took the the single channel amps of the 60s and pushed them to the limits with more gain, multiple channels, effects loops, and pretty much every other feature we expect in a “modern amp.” It shouldn’t surprise anyone that a Dumble and a Mark III sound similar to each other.
@GuitarTonePro
@GuitarTonePro 4 күн бұрын
@markwilliams142 Right on, and the EQ is so powerful in the MK III that it can cover a lot of ground. I’ll definitely compare it to my TS-1, but I’m also wondering how close it can get to a Marshall or other Fender based tones.

Anyone that has looked inside of one can tell you that isn’t true. Unless you’re talking about it at a very base level, like saying both a Dumble and a Marshall are just a Bassman.

I got 2 boxes and 2 bs Wombtones. I'm enjoying the phaser and have a plan for the other Wombtone. I've got one more box coming, probably get it late Jan. Hoping I'm as lucky as you were here.

Thanks! I can’t believe they actually sold, I put the first one up basically as a joke and it was gone in minutes. Seriously had to think about even listing the other one (some days I still regret selling my acid etched ayahuasca) so I bumped the price even more. Still sold in minutes. 🤷‍♂️ great pedal, but not worth keeping to me unfortunately.

@GuitarTonePro Ай бұрын
Awesome! I’m curious how different the “precious” edition really is as already the SHODA is only marginally better than a Tumnus. I can already see the difficulty in comparisons to come since recording and then uploading to KZbin is going lose a good bit of the difference.
@murkyfluid7625
@murkyfluid7625 Ай бұрын
@GuitarTonePro I had the same thought about how different the precious vs regular are. I've got an older ckk scream honey, it's similar to the shoda set, but the shoda def sounds better. So maybe Wu really is improving the design with each iteration. The tumnus seems like it has the bar pretty high for this type of pedal.
@GuitarTonePro
@GuitarTonePro Ай бұрын
The Tumnus is great because it has extra low mids like the SHODA does. I’ve compared it to 3 Centaurs, a KTR and a couple Archer and other clones. The SHOD is the first pedal of this type to have something the Tumnus doesn’t which is high harmonic content that blooms as the note rings much like the lead channel of a TS-1.

Depends on the application. Into a clean amp the B has more gain an is somewhat similar to the MGAT series in a simplified standard overdrive package. Like a high gain Marshall tone. Into any driven/lead channel amp, the volume of the A with its EQ curve does something pretty special that so far I’ve only really gotten from a Kingsley tube based boost.
@GuitarTonePro
@GuitarTonePro Ай бұрын
Andrew here! I just wanted to clarify that I goofed in this video and mixed up which pedal is what. The SHODA is the Klon based pedal and the SHODB is the Pre-amp OD Gain Stage. No manual comes with the pedals and the site lists the pedals in B then A order as well as tells you to run B (the preamp) into A (Klon) which is backwards of how a Klon and amp would be used.

@GuitarTonePro
@GuitarTonePro 2 ай бұрын
So the partscaster had skinny frets that I just didn’t like, and was originally made wrong with the bridge in the wrong place so intonation was off. I was able to fill and redrill all of the wrong holes to correct that but the skinny frets mean it just wasn’t for me. The Squire was the first one I picked up and felt pretty great from the start. I did roll the edges of the fretboard more and filed/polished the fret ends but otherwise it played as good as any modern American Standard I’ve played which is what sent me down this path. Last is the “vintage” Mexican Strat. That guitar has mojo, plays amazing and has honest wear and yellowing that make it look great. Not sure if that is a fluke guitar from that year or just fits me perfectly, but feels and plays better than most Custom Shop Strats I’ve tried. In the end I kept the affinity as an experiment guitar, took apart the partscaster and sold everything except the electronics and put the electronics in the Mexican Strat as well as the vintage style tuners. Now it sounds as good as it plays.

That’s tough as the pedal is pretty interactive based on the guitar and amp you use it with. The pdf is a good place to start for typical Marshall sounds. From there it reacts a lot like a Marshall so some of the rules apply as well, such as a lack of base in a Plexi until the gain is past 2 o’clock or diming the mids will tighten it up. Don’t be afraid to to go extreme with the settings either, a lot of times when going to a cleaner tone I’ll have the bass almost all the way up.
@GuitarTonePro
@GuitarTonePro 5 ай бұрын
@yo_soy_pmd Ok, played around with the pedal some more to find a good starting point. These settings are about what I use going into my Bloomfield Drive with all of its knobs set to noon. All pedal setting are expressed in o’clock values. Volume to unity (just below 9), Gain a hair below 3, presence 12, Treble 12:30, Middle 1, Base 2:30. Switches are: top end down, low end down, densitity up, golden era down, gain structure up, gain saturations middle and right. For me at least these settings work on all 3 channels with my Strat.

Nice simple demonstration - thank you for taking the time to do it. You can hear the Two Rock doing its thing the whole time, which shows the relative transparency of the pedal circuit. Your video helped confirm me acquiring a CC-1, which now sits on a small board that will be used with a single Morgan JS12 combo and mainly humbuckers (SG), so it’s quite good in a range of situations. I find with all the Cornish stuff that it sounds best at gig levels - which I appreciate is what they’re intended for - and can be underwhelming at low vols. I have a Duplex on my wet/dry (TR and Matchless) board and they just add a great mid range that isn’t in any way honky, and sound better the louder you can get away with.
@GuitarTonePro
@GuitarTonePro 6 ай бұрын
Cornish pedals definitely are more at home at gig volumes! Now you say that your CC-1 sits one a “small” board, but I find that hard to believe based on the size of that thing!
@onenotesolo256
@onenotesolo256 6 ай бұрын
@@GuitarToneProI use the term loosely! Couple gain stages, couple of wet effects. To be fair, the size of the enclosure of Pete’s stuff - even the battery-free ones - means you can squeeze them up against other pedals and still hit the button on stage. With smaller pedals, I tend to leave a bit of a gap between them to avoid hitting more than one, so it’s not much more real estate - from side to side at least.

@GuitarTonePro
@GuitarTonePro 7 ай бұрын
This one is more accurate to the vintage amps but doesn’t have a high gain JVM mode. The high gain mode is Mr Wu’s take on a modded JCM800 but supposedly the way the other modes react to the signal (for example the guitar volume knob) is supposed to be even closer to the actual amps. In practice, it’s generally brighter and more open sounding. I still have the original so I’ll try and do a comparison at some point, but some of the settings don’t come across well after KZbin compressed the video.

Can it achieve decent tone at bedroom volume levels while others are sleeping?
@GuitarTonePro
@GuitarTonePro 7 ай бұрын
Really depends on just how low you need it to be. I play at night when everyone is asleep and can crank 100 watt amps because I’m in a basement offset. But as far as a “bedroom” volume amp, the high gain channel is ok at low volumes, but the other two channels don’t do a great job IMO. Unless you play out (and quite loud at that) as well as bedroom levels, this isn’t the amp for you. It’s like old Boogies where the volume goes from can’t hear to too loud by blowing on the knob.

Nice demo. This pedal is a favorite of mine. It really sounds great straight into clean power amp too. Doesn’t even need to be a tube power amp. Really a great full amp in a box pedal. I have the old MGAT-1 Hyper Preamp too. They both sound great into front of an amp on clean channel, but I think the Golden Era sounds a little better than the Hyper Preamp when going straight into solid state pedal power amp pushing my cab. Wu is really a Marshall enthusiast to create such a great sounding pedal. Pedal is quiet and has good sensitivity and response to pick attack and guitar volume rolloff.

Couldn’t agree more, both MGATs have become some of my favorite overdrive pedals and pretty much just work however you run them. The original is still worth keeping for the higher gain sounds, but I agree the GE is just a bit more responsive to the guitar.
