Great video man, I think you should have mentioned amount of tinder and preferred types ex: cattail heads or if you should just craft when needed. With regards to carrying a hatchet: Interloper: unless you have cougar claw, you should carry improvisee hatchet only. Once you have the claw, only then should you start to consider knife only when you don't need to chop wood. This is based on struggle stats from the wiki. On all other difficulties, you should only ever carry the hatchet. It's better than the claw in a struggle and more versatile.

I suggest to care a hatchet always with you just because it it's the best weapon in struggles. Yeah, knife deals more damage to wolfs, but hatchet allows you to receive less damage and also as I know defence with hatchet takes less time (hope u understand what I mean 🥲)

Cool video, although Interloper is a different game. Until the very late game you need to constantly move, and you can't always afford a round trip to your safehouse, so tools like the improvised hatchet gets carried around. The same apllies to Skillet+Cooking Pot instead of either one. As for torches, since you need to save matches AND you want to avoid struggles as much as possible, there's a reason to carry more than 3 to chain torches and keep one single fire burning longer while protecting you on the way. That said, I’ll use some of your advice for the late game in Interloper.

You are 100% right, everything I say in these videos is assuming that you are in a spot to make that round trip and in interloper it takes quite a while to get that luxury

Always always always take a hatchet with you: Can cut down saplings, best tool to win wolf struggles, can break down bushes blocking ways, cut firewood, break down furniture for room of a possible new base (there are also hidden items behind wood crates (Hibernia processing plant), and use if your knife gets low. I really see no time where not taking it is a good idea. Just my 2 cents.

Awesome vid! Although I personally disagree on bringing a pot instead of cans, and I understand the arguments for bringing a pot; this is just the reasons I'd rather use recycled cans 1. Weight 4 cans, or in other words 2L worth of cans only weighs 0.6kg, while a full pot weighs 0.4. That's almost half a KG difference, and put into perspective, a 40% lighter than just using cans as opposed to pots. 2. Cooking I'll start this off by saying that I haven't delved into recipes too much, as I started playing the game somewhat recently (on Voyager). That being said, provided that you pack enough food (or forage enough cat tail), you probably won't need emergency food (especially if you're exploring an "urban" environment with artificial food to loot). However, water is something that can be more problematic (especially if you don't feel like carrying too much water around, or eat dry food), and considering that cans are seperate containers, you can cook 2 at once at an campfire to double water boiling rate! (Quadruple if you're lucky enough to find a stove!). Same goes for making tea or coffee; you can only make one cup at once with a pot, while you can make two (or four) with cans! 3. Side product Despite your suggestions for food like crackers and energy bars (Which are great suggestions, of course), foods like canned peaches, tomato soup and dog food can help recover hydration as well, and considering their weight, often lighter than water (if we look at the net weight of all canned food being 0.15KG), and their calorie count (especially peaches and dog food) combined with the hydration, may be lighter than an equal amount of calories in an energy bar combined with the water needed to hydrate the same amount (as well as what's needed to compensate for the hydration loss of the energy bar). I haven't done the math for this, but this was just a side point I thought of. Main point is, if using canned food instead of other artificial foods, you can get the cans leftover from eating the food instead of bringing seperate ones with you when you travel. I am so so sorry, I did not mean to write an entire essay in your comments, and go on tangents midway through (it's 4AM here and I can't sleep), and thank you if you read through the whole thing, you're a trooper! You made an amazing video, and I just wanted to share my thoughts and opinions on your advice. I'll see if I can do any of the math tomorrow, and I'll update this comment when I do, and reassess my points and thoughts. PS: Unrelated to the cans, but I like to bring 2L of water on trips with me instead of just 1 :P

I'm very keen to see where your channel goes from here, I've wanted to see videos like this for this game for ages c: if you're open to suggestions, years ago I created a few tiers of clothing sets that formed a gradient from the most lightweight still warm clothing to as warm as you can get haha. If you want to save on matches: never lit a fire with matches before level 4-5 firestarting, use a torch (100% guaranteed to be lit no matter the match) and you the torch as fire starting, if it fails, you can retry using the same torch (meaning the same match. If possible use mag lens. For the hatchet, if you play interloper, you should keep the improvised hatchet on you (until you get a cougar knife) as it is the second best weapon to defend against wolves. Hacksaw is good all around to harvest meat faster (not as good as a knife) and cut limbs (not as good as a hatchet), and it can be repaired with scrap metal while knifes and hatchet can only be repaired with wheatstones and hacksaw is one tool instead of two.

Great video but I do have some things I disagree with and just so you know I primarily play stalker so that's where my experience is coming from. 1. I believe taking two cans can be better then taking a cooking pot. Yes you cannot cook with can but the two cans but I have never been in a situation where I have need to do that and having two cans instead of just one still allows you to boil water super quick while saving a bunch of room. While both can be good options I don't believe one is strictly better then the other. 2. Unless you have a very high fire starting skill you should always carry a torch on you. Having a torch allows you to always start a fire with one match or use of a fire striker as you can light the torch and then use it to start the fire so even if you fail you can try again without wasting a fire starter. Even if the additional weight of the torch becomes a problem on your trip you can just drop it as they are super easy to get anyways. Again great video and you're honestly making me consider making videos of my own. Keep up the great work dude you will for sure grow to be a big channel! :D

for long trips where weight is a big consideration, i prefer to take 2 recycled cans instead of pots if i bring provisions or am exploring a new region. if its a new region, i know ill find food like cattails or human food, so bringing pots for cooking is just no necessary. the efficiency for water is also negligible since wood or coal is usually not an issue. carrying 0.3kg instead of 2kg is a massive difference if i know ill be hauling loot i find. for the same mass, i can carry 2 cans and 6 or 7 coal or 2 cans and 8 cured fish (7200kcal). i think its clear that in those cases, pots and pans might be holding you back.

A flare doesn't actually just scare wildlife, it's also a last resort light source and firestarter. You should carry it to idiot proof your pack in a way, you never know when you'll forget you ran out of matches and forgot to grab more or left your lantern running when going to sleep.

in regards to recipes, there is a topic worth mentioning: extra calories from recipes. some recipes will yield higher calories than what their ingredients alone are worth whereas other recipes will make you lose calories. the negative yield recipes are bannock, peach pies, venison pies, ranger stew, prepper pie, thompson stew, last resort soup, pemmican bar, porters soup and vagabond soup. I have a spreadsheet detailing all this. some very interesting things to note is that prior to part 6 of TFTFT, thompson stew was the worst recipe, losing 1145kcal at cooking1 and 1256kcal at cooking5. the new recipes, which are all terrible, now have thompson stew beat with pemmican bar losing as much as 3903kcal at cooking5! another statistic i like to look at is the bonus calories for non renewable resources. since part 6, some ingredients are now completely renewable: flour, oil, corn, oats. for flour and oil in particular, i can easily "normalize" their calorie values if i consider that oil takes 1kg of animal fat, which is 900kcal/kg and oil itself weights .75kg, i can determine that flour has a calorie value of 2200 at cooking1 and 2750 at cooking5 (by using bannock for this calculation). this can then be used to isolate ingredients in recipes like peaches (non renewable) and determine how many bonus calories you get for using peaches in one recipe vs in another recipe, for example. this can help make informed decisions on what to cook with finite resources for maximum yield. anyway, using this sort of analysis, i have determined that the best recipes are dockworker pie, fishcakes, breyerhouse pie, flight porridge, the default stews (ptarmigan and rabbit are more efficient than venison) and acorn pancakes. breyerhouse pie in particular is incredibly strong with a kcal/kg of 13281 and the highest bonus calories of 984kcal (at cooking5). porters soup is an interesting case because it has 15000kcal/kg, the highest of all other recipes but it has bas bonus calories of -1262kcal. key takeaways from my calculations are that 1. flight porridge is best for efficiency with peaches, rosehips and syrups. yes, all 3. 2. ranger stew is the single best recipe for potato and carrots. 3. stalker pie is best for acorns 4. prepper pie yields 200% value for its burd0ck, but is a terrible recipe in terms of calories. 5. porters soup yields 167% value for cattails but its a terrible recipe in terms of calories. my spreadsheet is quite thorough and although its not yet finished as i have more ideas i can implement, id be happy to share it. thanks for reading :)

Hey just thought I'd leave some opinions here. I would always carry a hacksaw wherever you go because although it might be a bit heavy, it can do ALL the things a hatchet and knife can do besides crafting and breaking down large scrub bushes in HRV. It can also be repaired with scrap metal, which is a huge plus over both blades. I usually carry a hacksaw for versatility and a knife for harvesting carcasses, struggles, and crafting Also a quick reminder that after cooking level 3, smashed cans lose no caloric value and the can opener can be forgoed permanently. And always carry at least one torch for firestarting, as one match can be used to guarantee a lit torch, which can then be used to attempt to start a fire multiple times which can be used to conserve matches. TLDR: Always carry a hacksaw, leave behind the can opener always if over cooking level 3, and always carry one torch for firestarting purposes. Btw this isnt a criticism, just a differing opinon. Love the video and keep up the good work!

I disagree with not bringing a hacksaw. You can use a hacksaw to harvest meat from a kill, even better if you let it freeze first. Most importantly repairing the hacksaw only requires scrap metal which you can easily farm with the hatchet. Repairing the knife on the other hand requires whetstone, a finite resource especially on harder difficulties. This isnt as relevant anymore admittedly with the addition of the cougar claw knife also having essentially unlimited uses because you can keep killing cougars and just make more cougar knives when you run out of whetstones.
