This version of Jane Eyre was amazing. Charlotte was Jane to me. I also like the adaption with Mia.

Charlotte manages to be both plain and beautiful. She's wonderful in this role. It's my favourite version of Jane Eyre. William Hurt is brilliant as Mr Rochester ❤

This is my favorite movie version of the book. However, the fact that we didn't get those famous words in this scene... it hurts me a lot. "And become nothing to you? Am I a machine without feelings? Do you think that because I am poor, obscure, plain and little that I am soulless and heartless? I have as much soul as you and full as much heart. And if God had blessed me with beauty and wealth I could make it as hard for you to leave me as it is for I to leave you."

My favorite version of Jane Eyre! Just wish the ending was longer. It felt rushed to me, but other than that, the actors, the music, the direction and costumes are perfect.

They unfortunately had to deal with motion picture time constraints. It's hard to pack such a dense novel into 2 hrs.

What bothers me is he's too old to be Mr Rochester who was around 35 but he looks 45 here. She does look 19 but it feels like they have a father daughter relationship.

He is old enough to be her dad in the book. He's supposed to look middle aged and he does
@janeeyre-quotes4 ай бұрын
In the book, Mrs. Fairfax says he's nearly 40. So maybe about 38. William Hurt was 45 when they filmed this, so yes a bit too old for the role. Same with George C. Scott in the 1970 version who looked even older.

I have read the book and have seen every version of Jane Eyre movie. The book is so beautifully written. This version of the movie is by far the best version. It’s so beautiful - the music, the acting, the cinematography. It’s not overacted. This is probably my favorite scene. That line “I love you as my own flesh,” gets me every time. What more can you say to express your love than this. Beautiful !!

In terms of visual aesthetics, it's the best adaptation for me too. But for fidelity to the book, I prefer the 1983 TV version with Timothy Dalton. :)

the way he holds his breath before telling her he loves her, the do or die moment. That one moment was never acted before or since. Magnificent subtlety on Hurt's part, making this my favourite courtyard scene. Even with Dalton as the definitive Rochester

I like so much that this Rochester in this adaptation is very respectful towards Jane. In this scene he slightly provokes and encourages Jane to reveal her feelings for him. And afterwards kisses her on her face so gently and carefully as if she really were some unearthly creature. Very well written scene and characters. In other versions (and I saw all of them)) Rochesters tend to be a little bit too soppy and somehow seductive - rush into too anatomical and too explicit passionate kissing and all tenderness is lost (to my taste))

I haven't read this book entirely. But I never understood why he seemed to be playing with her feelings in this scene. And in every version it comes off like that. Except in the Fassbender one where he didn't seem to play with her.
@singingstar9992 жыл бұрын
It's definitely like that in the book too. He wants to get a reaction out of her - we are in her head so we know how she feels, but she doesn't express it to others often. He wants to know if she loves him back. Of course, there are less insane ways of going about finding out, including asking her like a normal person, haha! But this was the Victorian era, so all the restrictions of gender and class make it impossible to be truthful. He's playing with her to see if he can needle her into exploding (as she does) and revealing her true feelings. Then he can propose safely in the knowledge that she definitely feels something back. He goes about it by sparking jealousy because he's naturally a Cheshire cat prick, and that's why he's a fun character!

Btw I haven’t read the novel completely; but if this dialogue is direct from the novel you can hear words that no woman had said to her love in English literature at this time (please correct me if I’m wrong) . “ How can you be so stupid “ meaning how cannot you see how much I love you? “ and “ I’m no caged bird… “ etc and my favorite “ How can you be so cruel…” I know why Mr. Rochester behaves like that. I have done the same thing myself. His cruelty is nothing but frustrated passion and his way to erode away the layers after layers of walls that Jane protects herself with. He tried to awake the beast of fire hidden whit-in Jane. And he finally did it. For a woman of her position and status in Victorian England would have been unacceptable and improper. Gosh , Jane one of my favorite literary characters of all time.
