As good as these are, personal preference, the inline 4 still sounds best. The new CBR650R with the E-Clutch will be very interesting.

Are you sure that 2 gyroscopes turning in opposite directions cancel each other? Each has its own "rigidity in space"...each resists motion..and one does not "know" the direction of rotation of the other. It seems that two attached gyroscopes, each the same moment of inertia and rpm, would resist movement with twice the force of one, regardless of direction of either. Unless you are talking about gyroscopic precession, which is a different matter, and they could create opposing (canceling?) forces. You seemed to be meaning gyroscopic stability, though. I think that both could affect handling, I initially thought the "stability" effect would hinder handling more, but I'm not so sure now...gyroscopic precession has a noticeable effect on single engine airplane handling in abrupt maneuvers.

The AMA always seems to find a way to make Harley competitive by adjusting the rules. By the way I recently returned from volunteering at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials. Maybe a good topic for another episode would be about the difficulties involved in land speed record racing.

What I love about BMW's final solution to building a nice superbike? Apparently they simply bought a GSXR tore it apart and reverse engineered it to make a? drum roll......S1000RR ...Which is simply the ol "if you cant beat em? Copy em!" Not to dis any well built boxer powered racebike but I mean how do you improve much on the basic GSXR? other than to load it up with bells and whistles Suzuki didnt bother with? A German built High end GSXR 1000 with all the amenities! Or better yet a $40k M1000RR I mean why not you only live once!

I dont understand something. The TZ700 was basically two TZ350s ganged together right? And there was too much power for most riders? Then WHY didnt they simply use two TZ250s ganged together INSTEAD?? IOW TZ500 which I have never heard of....was that a thing?

Very informative and enjoyable. What wasn't talked about was what happens when a motor is run for short journeys in cold weather: condensation forms, which is acidic, and the motor doesn't get hot enough to evaporate the condensation, which results in contamination of the oil. In cold weather, a motor needs to run for about ten miles after it has reached optimum operating temperature to allow the condensation to evaporate. This is why buying a car with very low mileage from a little old lady is probably not a wise thing to do!

I myself am very interested if not excited about the development of automatic shifting. I have always been a sporting rider both on and off road including track days and racing I never thought I would say that. However, as a double leg amputee I would love nothing more than to ride again. I was able to manage when I lost my right knee below the knee with a rigged up rear brake, but options for modifying the shifting to accommodate my left above the knee is an expensive and questionable modification. A factory built sporty bike would be just the thing to get me back out there doing what I love most.

I loved this episode! I'm mainly a mountain biker. Mtb stands on the shoulders of moto history. The main variables we can adjust are... Choose linear coil or progressive air spring rates. Add volume spacers if you want to ramp air spring rate quickly but still run low initial pressures. You also might have some travel left during a g-out to absorb that pesky rock. High/low speed compression, high/low speed rebound... (sometimes position dependant, called beginning/end stroke rebound). You can run a bigger negative/positive air chamber volume ratio to prevent topping out harsh in the air and combat stiction. Fox uses nitrogen behind their anti-cavitation oil damper systems. Bikes all have a unique natural frequency, or harmonic resonance...bumps at this frequency will create positive feedback. Use this as you will, because sometimes it is nice to pop over waist high deadfall at trail speed. I use tubeless tires with Cushcore inserts (they act as a damper inside your tire, a beadlocker, and reduce rimpact by 50% or so) these allow lower tire pressures and larger footprints without burping a bead or ripping knobs off. Spoke tension and rim material can tune the bike's lateral and torsional flex (3d flex) so you track through rock gardens instead of pinballing. Harsh lateral impulse spikes can be rounded with less spoke tension. Use this for slippery mud races. High-pivot rear suspension allows a rearward axle path under compression -- just like having a fork setup with some rake. High pivots grow in length under compression, low pivots get shorter. (High pivots might plow better, but pump radial v²/r transition for speed worse?)... I found a max speed plateau where my eyeballs were so voilently shaken that I couldn't possibly go faster....then realized that relaxing my whole body allowed my eyeballs to see crisp and clear. -- Slow is smooth, smoth is fast -- relax for higher top speed -- keep the rubber side down. Thank you guys for everything! -some kid who got his hands on a ktm250 2t at 13 years old

In 1957, we took to it because it was *cool* !! Cycle magazine and Floyd Clymer put images and products in easy view ($.35 a pop) and it was irresistible..! Lightweights (for us high schoolers) like Parilla, Maico, Zundapp, NSU, Triumph Cubs) were our ticket to watch small, relatively inexpensive machines, become mighty entries for us to begin our explorations and be economical at the same time. For racing, It was the "coolest" to watch Guiseppe Rotigni all tucked in on that 175cc Parilla going down the Dodge City road race straights at speeds unimaginable for most lightweights. That's what drew me and many in my area to motorcycle racing. It got into our blood with a bondage that lasted for years.

On the bore/stroke ratio and torque (6:00)...if you assume some given cylinder pressure, and vary bores and strokes, keeping the exact same displacement, and simply use half the stroke as a lever arm, you get.....the same torque! Admittedly, I am ignoring some other factors- rod angle, changing of mechanical advantage due to crank pin position change relative to cylinder centerline, etc, but interesting to me anyway. I wonder if the myth of undersquareness creating torque comes from the fact that low rpm power is all you're likely to easily get from such engines, as, for any given displacement, long stoke/small bore limits valve and breathing area. I have an old GMC pickup, 1960, with a 305 v6. It is oversquare, in GMC literature of the time, they advertised that as helping low rpm torque. Could have fooled me, as it does not have much at any rpm, but is reliable and interesting. I've always liked the rs750, and followed the rule bending to limit it's advantage in the 80s, can't believe they are doing it again. H-D likes handouts (700cc+ tariff?)...it goes against the tough, independent image they seem to want. I guess it's just an affectation...talk tough, and many will believe I am! Then Honda or Indian come along- the plan falls apart when they get punched in the face. I do like xr750s, though.

Once again, you two have demonstrated that a rational engineering mind isn’t limited to robotic analysis of technical issues. It also sees the “softer” issues, like branding, with the same clarity and nuance. Marketing people, in my own personal experience, love to propagate the myth that engineers can’t see the forest for the trees. That’s always struck me as self-interested bigotry. Now I have a podcast to direct such folks to that will open their minds. Much love, boys! Kevin for President!
