Used to subscribe to print editions of: Cycle World Cycle Cycle Guide Motorcyclist then, later on, to ad free and very objective Motorcycle Consumer News You got some great tests in those days, 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile times & speeds 30-0, 60-0 braking distances plus all the subjective stuff regarding handling, comfort, etc along with a comprehensive list of specs.. Also included were race results and standings and a lot of interesting essays and travel stories by guys like Peter Egan. It was a good mail day when one arrived and a great one when two or more came. No videos but there was some some great photography. Nothing wrong with a good video but I know younger guys would love to have those publications now.

I wanted the mt09sp. Had GEICO insurance at the time. The base model quote was 500 per year. The sp was almost 1500. So I got the base model. Really wish I could have got the sp.

I tried the MT-09 Y-AMT model, it's pretty cool. I wish Yamaha would bring Y-AMT to the MT-09 SP model, it would be great if they still kept the manual clutch and shift lever like Honda's e-clutch

I still think that category that includes dual sports should be limited to motorcycles that are street legal. In my mind, the whole purpose of a dual sport is to have a bike that can be ridden to a trail, then ridden on said trail, then ridden home. Allowing this category to have motorcycles that are not street legal is a form of gatekeeping, limiting it to those who have enough money to have other vehicles to get the motorcycle to the trailhead. There were many years in my life when I could not afford to have a motorcycle devoted to off road along with another vehicle to transport it.

A Scottoiler will dramatically increase the life of your chain, maybe beyond the life of an unlucky shaft. Even better, is the super simple TuToRo oiler. One can expect a chain life of over 40k miles. I hear that BMW have started that the service life of the 1300 GS's shaft is just 80km (50k miles).

If you have listened to the Mark Hoyer/Kevin Cameron podcasts you will know Mark et al, eat, live and breath motorcycles. They know their stuff. Even so, i have to admit some of the "best of" choices had me doing a Whaatt da Freek?!!?? Hell no....the only one that made any sense was the track day bike and with KTM in serious trouble due to poor management and even poorer customer service, that is a doubter. And even that bike is NOT cheap. For most of all these chosen categories there are much better and cheaper bikes being made. Myself, I am a sport touring rider. It suits me and my geographical location particularly well. The Yamaha Tracer is absolutely not the best available bike in the category. Not even close. Plus, it is downright ugly. Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and even KTM make a much a better mile munching, twisty bending motorcycle. Personally, I think the emphasis on producing motorcycles that most people can't afford has to take a back seat. The fab four are still doing it right...

Re. WP: It's my view that KTM bought the company, because as they made more and more bikes, WP was unable to supply KTM with the numbers they needed. When KTM took the WP operation to Austria, they left the real knowledge behind in the Netherlands (later to start the suspension company TracTive). WP ran on momentum without the knowledge, so now they're producing poor quality suspension units. The suspension on the current 890 Adventure R is nothing like it should be. For its time, the 950's suspension was the very best; I expected the 890's to be better by 20 years, hut it's simply not.

I don't think I agree on the max instantaneous piston speed being attained when the con rod centerline is at 90⁰ to the crank throw. Very close, but if you want to split hairs, and apparently we do, the angular misalignment of the bore and the con rod centerline causes max speed to occur just after the 90⁰ point. (On the down stroke) The piston is not traveling in the same direction as the rod big end, and that matters. Lengthening the rod reduces this effect, but it is never gone. No, I'm not going to try to figure out exactly where that point is, but it is determined by stroke, rod angle and rpm. Cylinder and wristpin offset are taken into account by rod angle. This affect is also related to the inherent imbalance of a flat plane crank inline four...the changes in rod angle are different for the two pistons leaving TDC than they are for the two leaving BDC, creating different piston velocities, accelerations, and forces. Different forces = unbalanced forces = a bit of vibration. The degree of mismatch between the arc the big end travels and the arc the rod would "like" to swing in is different in the top of the stroke vs the bottom. Buzzz...that, and the sound, are the worst qualities of inline fours to me. But they are so sensible in other ways!

Oops. Please replace "affect" with "effect" in the beginning of the second to last paragraph there! (Continuing with the hairs)

Knowledge is key to a good bike , and a nice ride , more of a motocrossguy but same rules , and with kids in mx i had to adapt the bike to them as they grew and then my experienc came in hand , not like you guys that would have been hard , but searcing for informasjon and common sence , and i made them trust the bike and having control , and when you want your kid to move up to a new class it was the same all over again make the bike comfortable with the right widt of the handlebar and 100 other things . we all want to feel comfortable , the fastes guy and the slower guy , the champion cant ride fast without feeling a form of comfort . my adwise is try things . slide your forks up or down , and feel sit back on the seat and ride , and feel , dont be afraid of trying , if you are tall and heavy you want something else than the shorter guy +++++ good maintenance +++.have a nice christmas everybody . And i love you guys

The idea of a "best" motorcycle is silly. It's based on the premise that everyone is an average or typical rider. We are different sizes, shapes and weights. We are at different stages in our lives and we live in different climates. We ride different roads and have widely varying character traits. Our ability to fund our hobby can be very different. Our local regulatory environment changes the calculus on things like insurance and access to off road opportunities. All that said, I love a good top ten list. It gets me thinking about what new and exciting things manufacturers are bringing to market and how buyers preferences change over time.

The Tracer 9 beats out some of the most capable touring bikes on the market?? 😂 Goldwings, K1600's, R1250RT, FJR1300 are all vastly better at touring. The Tracer is a fluffed up MT 🤦♂️ The Harley Davidson beating out the Challenger Elite?? 😂 honestly I'd pick a Rocket 3 GT over either of them. Can't believe the Street Triple 765 RS didn't beat out the MT09 either
