My best friend introduced me to this song, basically it’s about a guy having to go off to war and he tells the woman he loves that if she still loves him by the time he comes back, she should tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree in the front yard and if he comes back and there’s not a yellow ribbon, then she doesn’t love him anymore and he’ll move on. well he comes back and there’s like 1 million yellow ribbons on the old oak tree and everybody celebrates.

…. He’s not going to war. He goes to prison and while in prison sends his lover a letter telling her to tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree if she still loves him. A lot of people think it’s about war, but in the lyrics it says “I’m really still in prison and my love she holds the key”.
