Linear track turntable is the correct way a record should be played back in any case because i believe it is the way the groove is originally cut into them.However they are more expensive because of the servo motors that need to pull the pickup arm across the record.

I disagree I don't think these 80s midi stereos are naff, they were and still are acceptable for the mass consumer as by that time the majority of people wanted an all in one system because they were less expensive than seperates, minimalist and easy to set up. The tracking system on the record player is ideal especially if your the sort of person who doesn't have the time to listen to a whole lp in one sitting but I'm not so sure about having auto function but quite a few midi systems from the late 80s had auto function, the down side to that is having the radio blasting until you press the play button on the tape deck or the record player whereas at least if you have to manually select the function it will stay on the source you selected until you select another source. I'm not suggesting that these midi systems are as good as hi fi seperates but I think these all in one systems are a little underrated and these older systems do actually have a decent sounding cassette deck. From the front these midi sytems even look as if each section is seperate components and from the front it can look quite convincing. But in any case if it still works it's too good to end up in landfill and as it's 80s it's considered retro.

Hi Edward, I have one but there's a light leakage around the seam. Very light, but limescale gradually builds up. Any solution, or is it a gonner? Thanks!

If its on one of the metal seams then I'm not sure it could be easily fixed. It could be soldered perhaps? maybe ask a plumber, I think the base metal is copper then plated so it might take some solder, nothing to loose one the leak gets too bad

Hello again Edward, I am about to start working on my TK-5, but I know next to nothing about those machines, namely how many belts should be in there, I suspect one or two of them have been eaten by rodents, since there was a lot of droppings inside the cabinets. Is there any way I can get in touch with you through e-mail so you can ive me a starting point ? My e-mail is revealable on my channel as you might have noticed. Only if you have time for this of course mate. Have a great day.

I don't have the exact part number but the element is replaceable with a visually similar looking part, as long as the length is about right something that looks the same should do. Try to also match the wattage so it all heats up as before and lower wattage will take longer etc

This all came as a setup, the tape recorder is a mono twin track one, the top of the range one for this radiogram would be the TK27, I do have one for another Grundig radiogram.

@@Vintage-Tech Ok thanks, sure is beautiful. Hmm TK-27 hey ? Well if i have any kind of success repairing the TK-5, i'll start looking for one, i've been lucky these past 3 months or so. The Blaupunkt Riviera 2540 USA namely landed on my bench for dirt cheap. Restored it in 3 weeks since it virtually needed no cabinet work. The 4055 will need more work for sure.

Wow ! Edward, thank you very much for sharing this little series, i was looking for someone to post a video showing the guts of those machine, because i recently bought a Grundig 4055 that had been fitted with a TK-5 and i also want to restore it as soon as i am done with the radio itself. I know my way around radios, but i have never repaired or even opened up one of those recorders. I am surprised by the amount of capacitors inside the chassis. I also agree about the Wimas, unfortunately they have all gone bad by now. Whenever i see them I don't even bother to take the multi-meter out anymore, i just change them all. Thanks for sharing.

The TK5 is the budget one that doesn't take the 7" reels, I think its a bit simpler inside but sounds good with its Grundig speaker and if you connect it up to a Grundig radio it sounds great, the only issue with the TK5 is finding one that's not been used to death! people were still using these into the mid 80's unbelievably!

@@Vintage-Tech Yes indeed, i figured it would be the entry level model, but as long as i can get it working again i'll be happy. I have a big R2R upstairs in the living room; Pioneer RT-909 from 1977. There were still some sources for reels and tapes 5 years ago last time i checked, i hope they are still around now though. I should have fun with the TK-5, it promises to be quite a learning experience...

This massive machine was resorted in a few weeks and was by far the most complicated restoration I have done as the switch bank had issues and carbon tracking!! I only really had the time and want to complete this one because at the time I was grieving for the loss of my partner who was only 34 when he died so I put my energy into restoring this Grundig 8055 (the UK version with the push pull amp and the bi-directional tape deck) I worked on it day and night and was almost obsessed with it but it got me through a tough time and once I felt sufficiently more like myself again years later I sold it to a chap who has it on display in a cafe where everyone can enjoy it and it will be well looked after. I don't do so much of this kind of work now as I have enough in my personal collection to be getting on with and enjoying using them, but I do the odd repair when I see something I fancy. Take care!

@@Vintage-Tech Oh my God, ok I get the picture. Sorry for your loss, that's really tragic, so young... I come from just about the same place in the sense that after 30 years of law enforcement, I needed something to get back to ''normal'' civilian life and forget about all the bad memories and close calls that come with the job. So, I can totally understand the obsession part believe me. Even after 3 years of this, I still work on a radio or some kind of audio gear almost every day. I actually feel useless when the workbench is bare for a day or two. Ding-Dong ! Oh, that's Pascal from Fedex (yeah, we're on 1st name basis...) parts for the remote are in, will get to it right away. Be well, God bless.

Thanks for sharing this Edward, i'm in the process of restoring a 4055 WF/3D at the moment; The radio is fully recapped and i'm hoping i'll be able to adapt a Russian Tuning Eye to replace the EM34 impossible to find nowadays. Yesterday i tried connecting the wired remote and it ''wants'' to work, although some bulbs are out and the volume pot is scratchy and unstable. I'll open her up today and of course i expect i'll have to recap it as well, but i'm confident i'll get it to work as expected. Have a great day and again thank you 🙂
@Vintage-Tech
@Vintage-Tech 2 ай бұрын
No problem glad you enjoyed the video! The remote is a bit of a compromise for the convenience of remote operation, it can introduce a little hum depending on where you route the wire and the volume pot as I have investigated wont or shouldn't completely mute the volume (unlike how it looks in my video) just reduce it a fair amount, this is I think more of practical implementation to prevent people thinking if its turned down and the radio on its faulty, or leaving the set on by accident if the volume was completely muted. Its a fun addition to add to the radio enjoy!

@@Vintage-Tech Ok i see what you're saying, perhaps the wire acts like an antenna and picks up interferences from the LED lights or the dimmers. These radios are very prone to picking up those interferences, especially on AM. I took mine apart this afternoon only to discover one of the internal legs/screw sockets was broken off right next to the power cord hole. It was poorly re-glued (with super glue i'm guessing) so i did my best to refit it in place with epoxy. I'll let it cure for 24 hr in hopes it sticks this time. I was also surprised to discover there was a vacuum tube in the connector box. Luckily it still tests ok on the Vacuum Tube tester. All of the capacitors were of course cactus between 50% and 105% out of specs. I should get the caps i was missing tomorrow. Lastly i should have the 1st videos of this series out sometime next week, if you're interested to see the 4055 getting restored. Thank you again, be well have a great evening.
@Vintage-Tech
@Vintage-Tech 2 ай бұрын
@@raymondmenard5444 Yes the valve in the connector did take me by surprise but it operates quite cool. Yes there is going to be more interference nowadays for the lead to pick up. The capacitors are critical values as most of them are in the tone circuit so need to be spot on to achieve the desired effect on the preset tone switches. Good luck with it all and I will look forward to the videos!
@raymondmenard5444
@raymondmenard5444 2 ай бұрын
@@Vintage-Tech Thank you Edward, yeah, no kidding those caps in the tone shaping path absolutely have to be spot on, although i always put higher voltage values, but i keep the capacitance as exact as possible. Also after 3 years of restoring radios, i found out the hard way the schematics aren't always accurate, i often bought my caps before hand after looking at the diagrams only to find out they had changed the value or the voltage of a part in the chassis. It's just that we can't always find the latest version of said schematics nor did they have the means to update all their documents way before computers and Internet. I would really love to have you watch my next series, i think you're the kind of guy who will appreciate this kind of stuff :-). Have a great day.
