They've done an excellent job with the reconstruction with new materials, but there's part of me which kind of wishes they could have just built an entire new buoy frame base, too, and had it for comparison to the stabilized, but preserved, original buoy in the condition it was in after recovery from the sand. When dealing with a large enough artifact like a museum ship some level of restoration and new metal is needed to keep them afloat and intact in their restored condition, but so much of this is new metal and the scale of the project is relatively small by museum ship standards that like I said I'd almost be able to have a replica available for viewing, and then next to it under cover and preserved with photos documenting the find, degradation, and recovery the remains of the historical buoy.

11:46 - Wait, wait wait, you mean Herbie floating on water WASN'T JUST MOVIE MAGIC?! BUGS USED TO FLOAT?! As a longtime lover of VW Bugs (thanks to the Herbie movies) this video is one of the most delightful things I have ever discovered, I'm so happy I stumbled upon your channel! What's especially fun is that my 2004 VW Bug (named Toothless after the dragon from the HTTYD movies) always does amazingly well in the snow, and this year I haven't even had extra weight in him and he's been cruising along as well as any big pickup truck on snowy roads! He's also a manual transmission, which definitely helps with driving in the winter. (also I love that there was a Mini in Antarctica too! My mom drives a Mini!) Anyway, thanks for the super fun video! 😁

My father worked on some of these luxury PBY conversions at the Lockheed Aircraft Services Co. at Ontario, Calif. in the early 1950's. He used to fly in them from Ontario to either San Diego Bay or to the Salton Sea during shakedown testing. 9:37 looks just like my mother back in the day. She's now 97 years old.

Perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me, but I remember reading [in the 1970s] about a similar rig made by Studebaker in the 1930s. That one had separate truck and trailer components. I imagine there were other "great white hunters" needing" portable accommodations in that decade.

IH was truly one of the finest examples of American ingenuity in manufacturing. We have a 1950 international M tractor that had never had any major mechanical issues, and still starts and works every time.

6:24 old Apple logo and .exe format... could older Apple computers open exe files? Wine existed already for a few years when that rainbow logo was phased out... also, the loading is for "Jungle Yaucht.exe" and the animation is "Jungle Yacht.exe"... is this 2 second transition specifically for me to be confused? not to sound like complaining though, it is fun to find these small details, and it's a great video, I hope You will not run out of these interesting vehicles for a while, I love this series

The trailers look a lot like circus caravans I've seen from the 50s. A circus is exactly the kind of place ex military vehicles ended up. I wonder if that's what happened to them.

Of course we get the now standard “Quick thanks to today’s sponsor” that goes on for about ten minutes. What exactly is the point of paying for KZbin Premium?
@CalumRaasayКүн бұрын
Well it cost me £700 per minute to licence that footage - so without the sponsor there would be no video
@brendanchambers937414 сағат бұрын
@ My gripe is with KZbin and the companies charging 700 pounds/minute to license footage.

That's sadly the cost of productions these days! Tbf these prices are normally for TV shows with much bigger budgets, but you can appreciate how it starts to add up- especially when I post as infrequently as I do!

I get a nauseating whiff of smug jealousy in this tale, the perspectives of contemporary writers...."these were more appropriate for the war effort than for some rich guy driving them around taking pictures"....assuaging their collective guilt from stealing someone's work and property for their own use. "The war effort". Ha. Bet they ended up as beds and baths for some lazy foreign generals!

I think the move away from “coach built” Platforms didn’t help- back then small firms and independent body shops could churn out anything you desired on a standard rolling chassis!

@CalumRaasay Interesting! I didn't consider how the shift in industry has effected what's achievable for all but the largest of manufacturers... Makes sense really... Still it's a big shame, especially now with today's technology, I imagine a lot more is possible.

To be clear only the land yachts belonged to Gatti, the rest of the support equipment vehicles belonged to International so the $75,000 confiscated from him was not true, dont know why International didnt send their support vehicles back

I imagine he didn’t known the land yachts either, they might have also been part of the sponsorship.
