I think people's discomfort with murder ballads stems from those that are written/sung in the first person. Little Satie would be less uncomfortable (and impactful) if "HE" had a gun underneath his pillow rather than "I".

Drive and Strength in Numbers were THE most influential records in my path into studying bluegrass…those and Doc. Of course I worked my way back into the 40s and 50s material. I did play In my first BG band Natchez Trace and Down in the Swamp. Cracks me up -that I thought I could play that stuff back then. Those tunes and County Clare just washed me clean. 😊
