When you close windows & doors you will be oblivious to the sound outside. If you have lourves then its not soundproof. If you have neighbours who don't like you then they will complain abt anything & everything & they say you are making noise but she should vulgarity at ppl passing by her doors & tell any M'sian who are just renting a room they have TB & "waste rice" to go back to their country. New ppl/friends visiting her she will yell at them till they no face; must always win. When grandchildren visiting she will be a tyrant & make the child cry & she will shout back why can't be obedient & call him an ill-mannered child.

I don’t think China will ever underestimate the USA capabilities to succeed in their World Empire. And the Chinese do not brag about their successes. It’s the Westerners, who constantly try to destroy China, and the BRICS BY threaten the countries, who want to join this organisation. Unfortunately, Kishore M. Is like many Indians all over the place, does not stand tall for one side or the other, because the West has, and still does create the hostilities, threats towards the countries, who do not obey the Western role model, which is military force, no morals, no compassion, and not caring about people, only selfish interests to subjugate all other countries. This will not happened either. There will be always opposition secretly or openly. And people like Kishore should not stand on the fence, he should take a stance and for example help practically to create a multi-polar world, or when he is fond of the USA and the hegemony empire than he should openly support this model. But his watered opinions what others should not do is pathetic. Bye. After 13 min. He annoys me. I am a BRICS supporter.

Great to see two young people who can be so articulate. Special mention to Shan for your bravery in sharing your experience. I bet you are an excellent counsellor. However, when the aim to have "Zero Suicides Singapore" was mentioned, as a mental health professional myself I could see that the people who mooted that slogan were clueless or came up with it to impress someone. Typical corporate language. Mental health is not some productivity thing that you can fix with some KPI model you have that works in our Govt or Company. It's not some cheaper, faster better model or a Zero accidents policy that we can use to FIX suicide. In fact, that line of thinking and goal exacerbates stress in trying to achieve it. It's putting the cart before the horse. This is typical corporate thinking that has been drilled into us and the very cause of high suicide rates. As usual the Singaporean mentality of thinking of results FIRST instead of solutions. We are talking about human beings with feelings so let's start with the project "How can I help you" first.

On one side, I think we are too busy and impatient as a society and most people don’t want to be bothered with others’ mental health issues. It is made even more tricky that people with mental health disorders don’t want to try ANYTHING to change the situation. It’s the crippling effect of the disease. So even if we want to help them, after a while it’s impossible.

Definitely can relate to ZiYing on being ostracised for being good in your own mother tongue which was also Mandarin for me, to the extent that most students feign not being good in mandarin or even refuse to study mandarin and take pride in failing it like it's a badge of honour. No one boasts about failing Math or English but almost everyone boasts about failing Chinese. Part of this can be attributed to looking down on China back then - things "made in china" were seen as poorer in quality, etc. As China has become more developed now (even rivalling the US economically), perceptions have slightly improved but I personally feel the improvement is negligible amongst our youth. Some adults mature to slowly understand the importance of chinese but most of the youth still view it as "uncool", etc. ZiYing might not have the most objective view because she works in Chinese media where most people are interested in the language like herself (but in fact represent a minority of the population). Personally Im glad to be exposed to both English and Mandarin, as they introduce us to different cultures and ideas. The english language is known for its wit, sarcasm, entendre, etc, which I feel fits the western culture of being focussed on building good relationships with others through humour, networking, being chatty, etc. This was how Westerners built relationships so extensively when they were colonials in the past (and even today with so many MNCs like Google and Microsoft). Westerners are skillful at leading and connecting with people using "soft" power through language. English is also often used in quite a nuanced manner in professional settings especially, to avoid offending others easily (or deliberately cause offence if needed), while getting the message across in a smart way (Singaporeans however are not as skilled at this compared to the Brits and Americans; we also tend to be more serious/self-censoring which dilutes the humorous, witty aspects of English language). Mandarin, on the other hand, is a language which conveys rich imagery through the use of only a few words (or even simply 1 chinese character in calligraphy). This reflects the introspective, sentimental, philosophical, deep-thinking sort of culture in China, and is also why Chinese people may come off as "quiet" or "unfriendly" to Westerners, but they are in fact deep intellectuals, romantics, and technicians who take pride in making every word count. This is also reflected in their sentimental often sorrowful music (as compared to Western music which tends to be more light-hearted and includes profanities for listeners to have fun and bond together). The use of chinese language in communicating, while rich in imagery and beautiful, tends to be more straightforward and serious (less emphasis on humour, but on values like sincerity, honesty, everlasting love/romance, etc.). The result is that Chinese people may offend and take offence more easily, although Chinese culture at heart places emphasis on strong values. Sadly I think the chinese culture lends itself easy to misunderstand by those who were not brought up with similar traditions. I would love to learn more languages like Malay and Tamil too.

Having dual subtitles regardless of the content I'm watching really helped me learn my languages growing up. I'd pick up my english and chinese as I get to cross-reference the meanings of the show and it helped me make sure I understood what I'm watching better. It's a subconscious thing in my language learning journey.

i had nightmares learning my mother tongue (chinese). My family is peranakan, my grandparents spoke english unlike other grandparents who spoke dialect or chinese. So my whole family only knew english and pasar malay. Then studying chinese in school was hell, the teacher was super strict and kept scolding me. Even called my parents to meet the chinese teacher but my parents don't understand what the teacher was saying in chinese too lol. Chinese is extremely hard to learn especially when the words are not phonetic and must be memorised.

I've never felt a need to "memorise" chinese any more than English tbh. I did well for Chinese and perhaps it was because I had good teachers who taught us to visualise the Chinese characters as pieces of art, and also shared some of the history/"stories" behind some Chinese characters. For example, the character 明 (pronounced 'ming'), which can mean "bright" or "clear (in thinking or perceiving)", is a combination of 日 (meaning the sun) and 月 (meaning the moon), creating a poetic sort of imagery to portray its intended meaning(s). So I only needed to evoke that imagery when learning that character instead of having to memorise each stroke one by one.

she's a little bit too out of depth, missing the substance of Audrey's question again and again and going to her immediate heuristics of what she had done recently and completely forgetting the question's ask. every single answer about how to financially/economically model biodiversity value kept going back to emissions sequestration again and again. or just a throwaway organisation's acronym or standard. the most day 1 understanding of NBS talks about the other BEES they provide and Hoon is just absolutely clueless lol, and tourism is such a shallow example to keep quoting. from water quality regulation to soil health and long-term land arability. bro, in the industry so long cant do a simple chatgpt even once ah? this is embarrassing lmao.

People's comments and social media's portrayal of him made me think he was the opposite of what i saw in this episode. But i think he's alright, we need more MPs like him who do the right thing, even if it makes him less popular. People like him see the bigger picture, we may not always see the big picture and it's a tough job to balance the people's wants with what the country needs. I hope he'll continue to make the right decisions and stay this way because it's the right thing to do.
