It would be a good thing if pressing "5" show not only kill count but ranking points as well

Can't see how it's a 2024 version.
@ReiverBlue19712 сағат бұрын
Most likely it's been fiddled with so many of the original bugs (and I don't mean Thargoids) are squashed. As the ZX Spectrum hardware versions evolved, some games needed to be adjusted to run on new versions. Often modern quality of life features are added (so mouselook for Doom) to make them more fun to play.....and the 24 is 'cos this was done or finished this year........ All at a guess :) Also to take advantage of more modern proceedures and formulae within Maths to improve the game performance.

This version counts the enemy kills (Kill Score View), and by pressing "5" you can see the statistics (1:38) Released by Chxoft in 2024.

THE PAWN is one of Magnetic Scrolls' best text adventure games, ever made for the Commodore 64 and Amiga 😺👍🕹️. Even the music 🎵🎶 on the Amiga version of this game is still brilliant 😺👍🕹️. The Spectrum Next version of this game looks and sounds absolutely retrospectively magnificent 😺👍🕹️. Must give a big retrospective like 👍🕹️ from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.

Used to listen to The Shipping Forecast with mum every Sunday night/Monday morning at 12:45 am up until the time I lost her. This game would be a *VERY* suitable momento of that pleasant experience we both shared. Considering that we *both* went along to buy our ZX Spectrum secondhand (we were poor), I'm sure she'd have known I would've liked this had she been aware of its existence. A very good choice of program to develop. And the information about the backstory of Fitzroy is a fascinating bonus as well. A well developed premise.

Rob debuted his work-in-progress at RetCon 2024, earlier this year, and added the wubsoft 'cracktro'-style musical intro for us. While most of the graphics were adapted from the Atari ST version, I adapted the Vaus II pod from the arcade assets. I'd noticed the pod was drawn 9 pixels tall, while the original was only 8 pixels tall. Since the arcade game runs in Tate mode, but none of the home conversions did, recovering even that 1 pixel row between the pod and the bricks was advantageous. Once it's completed, Rob may look into a Tate mode adaptation for the SAM, for those who can turn their TV/Monitor on its side.
@wubsoft2 күн бұрын
That's right, I'm definitely going to have a go at making a Tate mode once the normal version is complete. And if I have enough memory left over I'll also leave in the level designer so people can have a go at making their own levels.

Nice to read that you could wirewrap a prototype in 1989. So I see that is was sold in east Europe, which always loved the z80, but the one country were commodore dumped their plus4. Why would a graphic chip in 1989 not have registers to change border width? 192 lines is less then C64 had on NTSC in 1982! How can there be memory contention? So I understand that the Z80 does not announce when it will need memory. So priority resolution would happen in a critical path. I always had a problem to understand why designers put so much stuff in the critical path. I see how for memory mapped IO you need to check the top address bits anyway to select a chip. Ah, can look up the page while your at it. Kinda like virtual memory on a modern CPU. These translation buffers are quite huge it terms of gates. The SNES instead only has a data page and a code page. Probably was a nightmare to pack data onto ROM. Some still images probably were squeezed into the padding. Anyway where is fast page mode? Why no queue for video data? SRAM should be easy for 7400 logic .

Really excellent use of the Spectrum's sound capabilities. Initially thought this was going to be a game for some reason, though am glad I listened to it through to the end, and would recommend that this music be added to a game - at least in the title anyway. Really top notch.

Definitely worth having a copy by the looks of it. Fantastic use of colour - really making good use of the Spectrum's striking colour palette. Perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon, rather than at any other time though in my opinion.

Not sure... the idea was great, for a smoother gameplay without sound-pauses, but the realisation leaves something to be desired IMHO: non-oriental music, still a bit slow (a bit faster animations would have been an interesting improvement), needed more sound effects for the different impacts. Small corrections (color clashing) for the backgrounds would have been also really appreciate. So and so...

Music style 1978 (classical or traditional music converted to simple chip notes). Game music started about 1986, when a few talented virtuosos put their hands on the computer keyboard...

I just got my Spectrum Next earlier this year and I'm going through your videos! I had no clue there have been so many games released over the years :-O I'm pretty new to the Spectrum since it wasn't available in Canada back in the day! It's like discovering a whole new world I didn't know about! 😲 I'm busy frantically writing down the names of all these games that look so interesting to me!
