This game very much reminds me of Super Mario Bros 1 but like an expansion of the idea of SMB1 by incorporating other enemies and hazards. My only real gripe with the game aside from some areas being brutally difficult like the one level where you are forced to be small Mario with only one checkpoint and very precise platforming is that sometimes the game can be repetitious at times especially with the bosses. When the game gives me unique bosses like the Big Hammer Bro, Larry, or even Boom Boom it's a welcome change of pace but most of the bosses are just Bowser with slight tweaks to his behavior, health, or the arena he's fought in. The final boss and true final boss though I could tell they tried something. The regular final Bowser introduces a charged lava spit attack and the ability to throw rapid fire hammers. The true final boss has a second phase where he can shoot large walls of fireballs and throw sledgehammers that bounce around. Also it's amazing how the game was able to render Ultimate Bowser into an SMW engine so seamlessly considering the song is associated with 64 bit hardware. Overall all bosses and mini bosses follow the exact same pattern. Dodge their attacks and stomp them till they die. But what the game really excels at is it's post game content. Like in SMW some levels have two exits. The secret exits don't really unlock anything but decorate the map with a tiny Toad House. The thing is the game doesn't tell you where the game's 5 secret exits are until after you clear World 8. The path to these secret exits takes you through a miniature stage that's integrated into the level that's generally more difficult. The game has 8 worlds, a world 9, and 4 letter worlds making for a whopping 13 worlds. With World 9 and the letter worlds being unlocked by beating World 8. There are also additional levels that you can access that aren't part of any world that test your skills. These include the iconic Funny Tanks which is just as nerve wracking as the source material it takes inspiration from, a platforming gauntlet where you have only one hit and must get through to the end, a maze that tests your memory skills, and a boss fight with the highest health pool in the game. If there's one thing though that's disappointing. Getting all the exits and clearing the checklist doesn't really reward you with anything aside from check the mystery folders sort of thing. Which I never bothered doing. Feel free to tell me if there's anything in there.
