Need to wear gloves w this. Read comments on another post from someone who did this for years. He Got cancer from the lead release from this process. Apparently the hot water opens your pores and the released lead instantly goes into your skin. None of this should be done anywhere near where food is prepared, including your oven. Good luck.

So you only clean them once with the spent primmer in place? Or decap after a clean and then clean again?

I put my brass in a bucket with hot soapy water and a spoonful of powdered citric acid mix them up for 10 minutes rinse them and they are already almost perfectly shiny then I tumble them for 30 minutes in walnut media to dry them and remove any haze they come out better than New! Highly polished!

Quick question: All perfect, except for some of the brass has white marks inside any idea whats causing that? It appears to be kind of like a paste that can be brushed out with a bore brush but it leaves behind parts of the brass removed and more silver colored. Also had some green spots on some especially down where the primer pocket is. Is it not drying enough, is it too much salt etc?

Thank you for the recipe - it hadn't occurred to me to create my own solution until I stumbled across this vid. The first time I used this solution it seemed to work really well in my Lyman tumbler with the cases coming out ultra shiny after only 1 hour tumbling with stainless pins, but a few tens of seconds in open air and they started turning brown, the zinc being leached from the cases by the acidity. 1 cup of vinegar seems too aggressive in my opinion - I now use 1/3 cup of vinegar with an extra cup of water, 1 teaspoon instead of 1 tablespoon of salt and a bottle cap of floor cleaner instead of dish soap (less frothy foam) and just increase the tumble time from 1 to 1.5 hours and the cases come out great without having to rush to neutralize the acid. My recipe: 1 teaspoon salt 1 bottle cap of lemon scented floor cleaner 5 cups water 1/3 cup vinegar

This classic recipe (I add 1 cup lemon juice to 2 cups water to his other ingredients) works for me as a "prep". The next day I dry tumble 2 hours in walnut media, then 2 hours in corncob. I've found you have to use BOTH types of dry media, not either/or. This recipe will get off 90% of the gunk in a pre-wash, thus saving your expensive 'Brass Juice' cleaner or equivalent. A wet wash makes dry tumbling safe as all the nasty powders are gone. If I do it for 30 minutes and oven dry, I end up with "pinkish" cases (weakened). For me this works best as a First Step. Getting range residue off first also makes it safe to put in depriming dies. Doing your final rinse in whatever method with distilled water and a couple drops of Flitz Gun Wax (or liquid car wax) and then shook in a rolled towel eliminates water spots.

I use a similar recipe and have a problem where I get a white powdery residue inside of SOME of the cases. Am I using too much salt? U also get some that look almost like rust inside. I use a non metal bristled barrel brush and it cleans them right out, it's just an extra step I don't want to take. I do think I'm using more than a tbsp. I am also rinsing the cases very well in hot water. Any thoughts?

Sonic cleaners suck overall for cleaning brass. They're great for small parts but not for reloading. You're better off going to Harbor Freight and buying one of their small wet tumblers. I can do roughly 50 223 cases in each drum. Takes only about 2hrs using Dawn and Lemmi shine and stainless steel media.

When you use vinegar and salt you need to neutralize the brass by soaking it in a water / baking soda mix for about a minute.

@@kingrat3035 Vinegar acid will continue to etch the brass on a microscopic level. Saw some testing and it created a measurable difference in case wall width over time and a couple of reloads, reducing the number of reloads you got out of the brass.

What I don't understand is that the vinegar cleans because it's acidic and the salt cleans because it's caustic. Surely mixing the two negates each other?

Cool, I've tried 99.9% alcohol for electronics parts (remove any LCD or maybe OLED screen, it'll destroy a layer in it and make the LCD translucent), not sure if that's a good idea. I always use it in the bathroom with baking soda and water in hand, just in case it catches fire. Not sure if distilled water would have as cleaned well but safer as pure 99.9% isopropyl alcohol. For hunting rifles, a single stage press is fine. I use a single stage RCBS Rock Chucker JR2 I bought in the 1970s at a garage sale and it is still my go-to press for handloading hunting rifles. The Lee Universal Decapper that fits in the press is handy to punch out fired primers. Also a RCBS bullet puller that fits in the press to remove the bullet and powder for any mistakes. For rifle hand loads, cases must be lubed before resizing, otherwise they will get stuck in the die while resizing.
