I am a gen Y'er. An early millenial of 38 and for any who see this I want to explain why we were lost. We didnt have anyone explaining how God and what the Bible said even meant. We didn't grow up with our questions or misconceptions being answered. Many of us learned more about the Bible from the Discovery Channel than we did our elders. We grew up without any real guidance so yes when we needed answers we went looking but we didnt go looking in the Bible because we weren't told there were answers. Most of us resisted the old fashion form of brow beating, the fear mongering, the appeal to guilt to make us feel shame so we walked a different direction. Rarely ever were we told the message of Christ and when we were it was the same rhetoric, the same watered down esoteric phrases that just didnt mean anything to us. We couldn't be reached because no one knew how to reach us. I've lived my life in the occult, in the atheist circles, fascinated by the one who would try to usurp an all powerful god and wondering if all the old stories aren't actually just aliens. What's sad, I've probably learned more about the Bible from Ancient Aliens than I had from my elders. This is the era of logic. We want to see something. We want to see the glass shards left over from Sodom and Gomorrah. We want to see the Shroud Turin. We want to know Truth. We are not content with Pascal's Wager because if God can know that we are not honest of our worship then what's the point of the worship?

Umm god doesn't care about me because I want to work from home doing something very enjoyable but can't because what I want to do is create sound that can be used to power things running on electricity or any other known power source but god obviously decided that isn't possible because there's not much energy in sound and so instead of laughing my ass off blowing up and sitting on whoopie(fart)cushions(just one very enjoyable example)5 days a week 8 hours a day getting paid by P.G. and E. and/or whatever number of other companies while getting medical, dental and vision insurance, 401k etc. god decided NO and if it's ADAMS fault for eating the apple it doesn't make since to punish me BECAUSE I'M MIKE NOT ADAM SO GOD DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ME AND DON'T TRY TO CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE!!!! Not just me either really go ahead and ask A TON of people(depressed people in particular)and find out THEY WOULD LOVE IT IF THAT WAS A PHYSICS FACT!!!!!

True experience: I have lived in the sheltering system for years and have endured pagans of all sorts. I have been successful not only in reading the scripture aloud 3 times but in college and professionally now. I had a roommate who practiced burning candles and tarot etc, she would put those ppl on the tv and they represented modern culture. I carried a Bible i had for years which that I read twice entirely and she asked to see it, I was apprehensive. She literally destroyed The Book in a matter of seconds, and I took it back from her hours later, after she tried to claim it was already like that. So when she was away, I respectfully retrieved it and placed it in my area. She was filthy, a total slob and I returned one day and she had The Holy Bible in her possession again and it was again out of the cover binding and whimsically around the filth of her possessions as just some trash. I always heard people who do acts such as what she did worship satan, she would talk to herself and speak of false gods and spirits etc, and she adored hip-hop and the like. She was proud to be of the LGBT community as a heterosexual or "pansexual" woman and it was just torture living with her, let alone she would violate my privacy and steal from me. She would claim she was a prophetess or high priestess of some sort, and I just told her she needed God through Christ, maybe not in those words but yeah... *edit:* all-in-all it was probably some form of worship to do as she did and how she did it, and she definitely went all the way in.

Absolutely zero difference - There is absolutely nothing mysterious about Biblical "tongues" - when referring to something spoken, they are nothing more than real, rational language(s); usually unknown to those listening to them, but always known by the speaker(s) - it’s their native language (in some cases, it is a language the speaker has learned). In contrast, the “tongues” Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians are producing today is an entirely self-created phenomenon. It is non-cognitive non-language utterance; random free vocalization based upon a subset of the existing underlying sounds (called phonemes) of the speaker’s native language, and any other language(s) the speaker may be familiar with or have had contact with. It is, in part, typically characterized by repetitive syllables, plays on sound patterns, alliteration, assonance, and over-simplification of syllable structure. It is also interesting to note that any disallowed sound combinations, i.e. consonant clusters, in the speaker’s native language are also disallowed in his/her tongues-speech. Further, this subset of phonemes typically contains only those sounds which are easiest to produce physiologically. There is absolutely _nothing_ that “tongues-speakers” are producing that cannot easily be explained in linguistic terms. Conversely, when it comes to something spoken, there are absolutely *no* Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s), though it may not be the explanation you want to hear, and it may be one which is radically different from what you believe, or were taught. “Praying in the Spirit” does _not_ refer to the words one is saying. Rather, it refers to how one is praying. In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will. In Pentecostal/Charismatic parlance however, the phase has come to be equated with modern “tongues”, i.e. when one “prays in the Spirit”, one is typically engaged in some form of tongues-speech. The word “tongue(s)” itself is simply a more archaic word for (real) “language(s)”, nothing more. Replace “tongue(s)” with “language(s)” in these various passages and the whole modern Pentecostal/Charismatic concept of “tongues” begins to become difficult to posit - “language(s)” sounds a lot less mysterious, and in many cases, adds more clarity to the text. Again, in Pentecostal/Charismatic parlance however, the word has come to be equated with the modern concept of “tongues-speech”. Most people who use ‘tongues’ are very keen on describing the ‘experience’. Indeed, for those that use it, it is very psychologically, physically, and spiritually fulfilling. It’s almost like primal screaming. When people practice ‘tongues’, they feel a sense of sweet release and inner peace, in that virtually all stress can be gone after the experience. People describe the experience, but in examining the “mechanics” behind it…well, not so much. When a person has experienced tongues, s/he is absolutely convinced as to the ‘scripturalness’ of his/her experience, and the correctness of his/her doctrinal beliefs - this, despite the overwhelming scriptural absence of anything remotely akin to what they’re doing. I'm not doubting or questioning the 'experience'; as mentioned, glossolalia as the spiritual tool that it is, can be very powerful and, for many people, the experience is profound. As one commenter put it, “Speaking in tongues distracts the ego/analytical/conscious mind while leaving the subconscious (the heart) wide open to import the visualization scene or image." Both the spiritual and physical benefits of using this tool are also well documented. Again though, it is important to note that this same statement can be made for virtually _any other culture that practices glossolalia_ . Religious and cultural differences aside, the glossolalia an Evenki Shaman in Siberia, a vodoun priestess in Togo and a Christian tongues-speaker in Alabama are producing are in no way different from each other. They’re all producing their glossolalia in the exact same way; they just have different explanations and beliefs as to why they’re doing it and where it comes from. “Tongues” is to some Christian believers a very real and spiritually meaningful experience but consisting of emotional release via non-linguistic ‘free vocalizations’ at best; non-cognitive non language utterance - the subconscious playing with sounds to create what is perceived and interpreted as actual, meaningful speech. In _some_ cases, I would argue that it is clearly a self/mass delusion prompted by such a strong desire to “experience God” that one creates that experience via “tongues”. Known by many different names, “tongues”, “glossolalia”, or more accurately “non-cognitive non-language utterance” (NC-NLU), is practiced by many cultures and religious beliefs from literally all over the world; it is relatively new to Christianity and certainly not unique to it. As a point of note, I’m a Linguist, and let me also add here that I am neither a so-called ‘cessationist’ nor a ‘continuationist’ - I do not identify with either term; in fact, I had never heard the two terms until just late in 2016. As far as I’m concerned, quite frankly, since the Biblical reference of “tongues” is to real, rational languages, obviously “tongues” haven’t “ceased”; people still speak.
