That was a great production line in the way the drums moved along it and were made by it. No wonder theres hardly any jobs. The machines did the whole lot from start to finish. A machine even spray painted the drums to then dry them by going into a big oven about 20 yards long and about 7 to 8 yards wide so about 4 drums can fit into it along a line at 2 feet wide each drum is they would need to be about at least 8 inches apart to let the heat dry them? Then after the first 4 drums slowly go in after about 10 seconds the next 4 go in and are just about 8 inches behind the first 4 then so on...so that oven could have at least 20 drums inside it at the same time with the heat at 360 degrees, yes thats hotter than hot. But look at how big the plant was and they only had about 15 too 20 staff and even half of them didnt really have to do anything, 2 woman just touched the drums as they passesd by them? And it wasnt a repair line. I have seen a repair line but it was a drum reconditioning line. As the drums got reconditionend by the best machinery in europe, and the plant had at least 40 men working inside it and about 10 men working outside the plant as they stowed the drums or put 220 drums from a stow onto a 20 foot long trailer cage and the shinter would take it to the back end of the plant and reverse it in perfectly right onto a bay so the men could off load them and start putting them into the plant to go round the line. It was like when 1 drum went out 1 came in and the line moved faster than you thought as did the men. That was in 1989. But the drums were perfect once they had finished. At first i thought? No way these are brand new drums not old reconditionend ones. Till i saw the treatment they got, they went through a blaster that blasted them so hard the old paint had removed so it looked like steel again that had never been painted. Plus the expander blew the dents out the drum. It depended on what the company wanted done to the drums that they ownend, as in you had class A drums and class B drums, the class A drums had to be perfect inside it too? So the lid would get cut of the drum then it would go through a burner upside down for a minute as the strong furnace burned the inside and outside of it so it would then go through a treatment service to clean it up to perfection then a special coat of paint would be sprayed inside the drum, then a new lid would be put on with a machine then it would be spray painted there chosen colour. The class B drums would be turn upside down with the lid still on it and all the bungs would be removed before this as the drums 3 quarter inch bung hole would be put onto a steel thin pipe about 3 to 4 inches long and at the top of the pipe would spray very hard cleaning fluids to wash the drum out as the machine could take at least 20 drums at the same time as it moved slowly forward with the fluids coming out the other bigger 2 inch bung hole then once taken off that they would be put through a blaster that cleanend the outside to perfect to then be tested for any leaks with a machine if passesd the leak test it would be painted then dried. It was great machinery when you saw what they did and how a machine could test a 45 gallon drum wich is alot and big and can show you where the leak is? Thats amazing tbh. The drum would go back if it had a leak that could be fixed. Then if it failed the same drum again then the drum just got scrapped as it couldnt be fixed. But they were more solid than people think, usely you could tell if a drum would be ok to pass just by looking at them and guessing how old they were? Some looked at least 12 years old and some 2 years old, some were a good bit heavier than others. Some could be reconditionend at least 4 times. 91 years the plant lasted. Plus it had the cooperage side too, the cooperage was there first for about 10 years, then they built the big drum plant and the place was booming as they started getting in orders from all over the place. And the customers knew nobody could match them when it came to perfection, with over 30 different colours to pick from in the painting section.
