There's a major difference between canonicity and continuity. Also, canonicity isn't a spectrum. It's just a yes or no question. Something can't be half canon, that just doesn't make sense. But if it's a question like "How many things/aspects of the books are ACTUALLY canon to the games?" Event X might be canon but Event Y might not be. It's a whole other discussion if you're talking about parallels. Two concepts or events that are extremely similar but not exactly the same. Scott and Steel Wool needs to figure this shit out immediately. The ambiguity only brings more unnecessary confusion and frustration. They really need to take some notes on how Alex Hirsch handled the lore and mystery of Gravity Falls. It's been well over 10 years and it kind of feels like they're still fumbling around with FNAF.

Yeah the issue with reaction videos is that none of it is thought out, so I end up mis-speaking and not really elaborating etc. Canonicity and continuity mean the same thing when refering to other franchises, only reason it's different here is because Scott defined he uses "canon" as "official" in a Steam post, which isn't the case anywhere else. I think it's pretty obvious that all of the "canonicity" debates is about continuity. No one is debating whether any of it is official. Also, canonicity isn't a spectrum. I think you misunderstood what I meant (again, probably because my own mis-speaking due to it being a reaction rather than a planned out video). I meant it in terms of taking information, I think some things are more reliable than others. I.e. If the books and games contradict, I count the games as higher priority for games-related information, and the short story collection stories I take as higher priority than the Novel Trilogy. Also yeah, I do think Scott has handled the books very poorly. He needs to say what's going on or at the very least, port all the important information over to the games so the books canonicity stops even mattering. No one is going to give af about the canonicity of He Told Me Everything because it's totally irrelevant, stories like The Man In Room 1280 is very relevant and its canonicity DOES matter. Ideally though Scott would just tell us and end the worst debate this franchise has had, but after 5 years of it, and joking about it on Reddit, I really don't think he intends to do that. Which is mildly frustrating.

the mimic i think is not just a haunted animatronic but haunted code. code that has been used in many animatronics and has seen all the major events in the series. its not just aping the tragedies of fazbears and fredbears but has a sophisticated and in depth interest in everything to do with williams crimes and fazbears history. this exposure to all the events has empowered it further, notably the mimic has a cavity in its chest where a battery should go but it works regardless and hasnt run out of power.

@toastedperfection2488Ай бұрын
The community really overreacted to FNaF World at the time it was wild in retrospect. I thought Sister Location was cool yeah but it's probably leaning on one of my less favourite, just because I'm generally not a big fan of story-centric games. I did like the story though, and the atmosphere of Sister Location was awesome. + It did have the more gameplay-centered element in the post-game Custom Night which ngl is probably one of my favourite office-style gameplay sections in the series. Also even if I wasn't a fan of the main gameplay, there's a big part of me that respected that it did something unique for the series which is honestly something I felt FNaF needed at the time.

@at_witts_end34702 ай бұрын
I 100% am all in on the mascot costumes theory. It feels obvious considering the Tales Epilogues. What's really exciting is that we'll see his spider form since one of the costumes is an octopus, and the book implies he's taken that form before. I've been team Glitchbear for ages and I'm so happy someone else thinks that'll be his final outfit. The only other option (imo) is Tiger Rock since his head is installed into the Storyteller. But that was probably just Mimic1 manipulating Burrows to give him that form.
@at_witts_end34702 ай бұрын
I actually think we'll play as Afton in SotM, after Dawkos stream...I think MM is set in the year 1978. This is the year The mimic story happens, and the year suggested by the fuzzy dice in FLAF (or 87 but MurrayCo disproves that). There's gotta be a reason Scott's only giving us an answer now.
@toastedperfection24882 ай бұрын
@at_witts_end3470 Help Wanted 2 is one of my favourite entries in the franchise (despite me to date still never doing a video on it lmfao) so I was never going to be upset about getting more HW2 content rather than SOTM. I'm also definitely very TalesGames and FrightsGames (to an extent) but as much as I love theorising, I wouldn't mind being wrong or anything. The part that's exciting about Tiger Rock for me isn't just "Oh I was right" but more "Oh damn they might actually lean into books content more". One of the most rewarding things about getting into a franchise like this is when a reference from a more obscure piece of media appears and actually knowing what it's calling back to. For me, with how hated the books are (and how much I actually surprisingly enjoyed them!) I felt the #1 thing I wanted was for some of that content to return at some point. Seeing a Tiger Rock Plush very much opens that door and I'm super excited to see how many new callbacks get added to the games in the future. As for playing as William in SOTM, that would be super cool ngl! One of my favourite lore pieces from Ultimate Custom Night was the realisation that you were playing as William so I'd definitely be down to see his perspective of things from the start. It could honestly make an extremely impactful twist-reveal if the game masked who you were at the end. Idk maybe I'm just too attached to twist endings hahaha.

One of the worst things about the modern fandom that is that there’s no creativity/change in the story whatsoever it has to be like The games no matter what If it’s inaccurate, you’ll get a bunch of people correcting/getting mad it’s not accurate Like I remember a video for a fan universe and the MCI had different names and like 72% of the comments were correcting them This definitely started happening after 6
@toastedperfection24882 ай бұрын
I wonder what caused the fandom to shift like that, because yeah it definitely wasn't always like that.
@Browhatisyoudoing2 ай бұрын
@@toastedperfection2488 sorry I’m late but I think what changed is that fnaf actually became a story in the games What do I mean? The original trilogy was more of a template of the story. There was a plot, but there wasn’t really any characters with names. all you have was phone guy and that was it. This allow for many to make their own interpretations of the story and how the events go down However things started to change after Sister Location where fnaf actually started to become a full-blown story with voice acting characters yada yada. Purple guy getting the name William Afton. However, that didn’t change too much it was still normal you know the original cast were still intact. Fnaf 6 eventually changed everything since it would give the MCI kids names, genders, Which basically kind of killed interpretation
@toastedperfection24882 ай бұрын
@@Browhatisyoudoing Good callout. Yeah this is probably exactly what it is. Very early FNaF required you to use headcanons to fill in the blanks, so things like headcanons had to be accepted. Back then the story was lore and not an actual story. Then yeah that stopped, FNaF started getting real stories in the games. As much as they're cool, it absolutely does mean there's less space for people to do their own things with the characters without interfering with the canon. Interesting.
@N800-q1b2 ай бұрын
the lore is too convoluted so i just make headcannons
@toastedperfection24882 ай бұрын
Yeah FNaF's lore is definitely not in a good spot right now considering Security Breach didn't turn out the way it was supposed to and needs to be course corrected. Probably will have to wait another 3-5 years before the direction of the franchise gets a bit clearer.

I never really thought about this from a teorists perspective- I'm somone pretty deep into the lore but I've never theprized myself, when you mentioned aus, I thought about mine where William is a good father rather than a terrible one, O havem't gotten hate probably bc I'm not popular enough yet, but I'm always scared my next video will blow up and I'll get hate for something in my au. But I can se the issue with being a theorist in this economy.

Jesus Christ, FNAF 2 Golden Freddy Mode was more intense than I remembered it. And I agree, KZbin's own nature pushes for more views, so youtubers would always prefer to make faster or even controversial videos without putting as much reflection as it could use. Due to think, fans get carried a lot in their interpretations and theories that discussions against them will get somewhat agressive, and those who only go for smaller theories or headcanons are not as pushed nearly as much as other videos. Hell, this video itself can be an example of this formula too. Still, good video, hope there's a change in the fandom for the better.

Quote from the Ology book series' wikipedia page: "The Ologies are a series of illustrated, interactive, montessori style books presented in an encyclopedic format. The inspirations for the topics range from fantasy and the unknown (myths and legends, creatures and monsters, paranormal and aliens) to non-fictional human and natural history. The series is primarily authored and edited by Dugald A. Steer. The various "authors" of the books are pseudonyms representing fictional characters who are experts in the subject matter. However, some of the pseudonyms used, such as Dr. Ernest Drake from the Dragonology portion of the series, may have been based on real people." Second quote: "Each of the books is given a fictional "author", and purport to be the writings and lost journals of fictional investigators and experts. Since the books follow an encyclopedia format rather than a narrative, Steer has said that "it's slightly different from traditional reading. Readers can dip in and out, but the essential story is told in a linear way."[2] The large-format books contain many novelty items of ephemera including removable maps and postcards, letters that can be unfolded, and tactile items such as “dragon scales”, "mummy cloth" and "gold doubloons". The books are illustrated by a variety of artists, including Helen Ward, Wayne Anderson, Nghiem Ta, Chris Forsey, A. J. Wood, Douglas Carrel, J.P. Lambert, Ian P. Andrew, Nick Harris, Anne Yvonne Gilbert, John Howe, Tomislav Tomic, G. Hunt, R. Sella, and Carole Thomann."

You pulled this from the Ology book series page. FNaF OLOGY is not part of that series, it just has a similar title. Similarly, FNaF: Secret of the Mimic and Bendy: Secrets of the Machine have similar titles but they're not at all related either. The ology suffix just means it's a study a path.

I agree with most of your points, but I can still appreciate V.I.P. as a decent first attempt for an interactive novel with a FNAF setting, and The Week Before seems like an improvement from V.I.P. . And it's so funny to me how the book has a missing link so one of the endings becomes unreachable unless you read the book page by page, the curse of Security Breach is so strong even a book gets unused content lmao.
