One of only two IROC races to be truncated; The other was at Darlington a few years prior due to tire fall-off/overheating issues after 46 of 60 laps. Mark Martin won that race.

Fun fact: Brendan Gaughan had a inflatable Spongebob in his truck during this race, there isn't many photos or good camera views of it, the best glimpse of it is at 1:01:25 you can see it peek over the dash right after he gets clipped and wrecked

In fact, Sam Ard wouldn’t be doing any racing at all in 1985. Later that year, he was seriously injured and was forced to retire. He still won the title despite missing the final race.

30:48 Mickey Hudspeth had to have his left hand amputated after his crash, John Gill had to have surgery to repair a fractured bone in his upper left arm. Gill also had two broken bones in his neck that did not require surgery. 1:32:50 1:37:13 Ron Burchette sustained a concussion in his crash and was hospitalized. The other two incidents, 2:47:04 3:33:17 while scary looking, everyone was ok. Old Atlanta was a tough ol' joint!

The most ARCA race that ever ARCA'd
@mattkowal908 күн бұрын
Forty-two cars started the race, only fifteen finished: 1st-12th, 14th, 18th, and 23rd were running at the finish. This race was also truncated with 8 laps left in the scheduled distance (race ended after 196 of 204 laps). Only six cars finished on the lead lap (all 196), 7th was three laps down (193), 8th & 9th were five down (191), 10th & 11th were seven down (189), 12th was eleven down (185), 14th was nineteen down (177), 18th was 67 laps down (129), and 23rd was 109 laps down (87). Tim Steele led the most laps (108), and a total of seven drivers led a lap.

Never saw a race before or since that had so many drivers injured- many seriously- or so many completely destroyed cars.

Indeed this has to be the world's most brutalist race ever seen in the history of not just Stock car racing but the whole of motor racing aside from Imola 94

Okay I now need to do a deep dive into this starting grid, because there's a particular name that stands out and it's not Atwood, Chaffin, Earnhardt Jr. or Andy Houston. Nope, it's 12th row starter JIM FRANCE... Is that THE Jim France that now runs NASCAR/IMSA?!

This is back when the Truck Series was a novelty in its inaugural season. The bulky trucks on the short tracks made for some amazing racing. Amazing racing in the second half and an amazing finish. This was authentic Truck racing and short-track racing.

Bascially, Wilkesboro did what Martinsville did with pit road. Except in Wilkesboro's case, they had no backstretch pits prior to the change.
