Oh, don't put a light on them; let nature run it's course. Instead, increase your run a bit and add some cold season layers, like brahmas, and add a compost pile to the run to supplement your feed cost. The winter layers tend to eat more and take longer to start laying, but it's worth the shift for consistent egg production year round. If you can't keep them in your current coop, then you can tractor them with a cattle or hog panel with a makeshift coop built in, or just make the whole thing stationary. I'm sure the uploader knows all this, but I've spent a lot of time learning from many different perspectives, and I know for certain that God designs it best. We don't want to manipulate nature; we want to utilize it as efficiently as possible for our needs. The drawback to birds like brahmas is the feed cost, their slower growth rate, and for some, their broody nature, but I say let the chickens brood out more and sell the chicks to 4H kids... does the FFA do animal husbandry programs, too? Can anyone answer that? I'm in to duel purpose birds because that is the most efficient purpose for a chicken. It means I'm not making a living selling eggs, but I never planned to do that anyway. I just want enough to help my family and to donate to my local food bank. I've learned enough about chickens to know that the best way to keep a consistently laying flock is to diversify it with chickens that suit different halves of the year. It could take 8-12 months before you see an egg from a brahma hen, but the number of people she can feed when she's done laying is worth the time and feed invested. Even after their prime years, I know that 8-10 dollars per "past her prime" hen should save more than a few of them from a stew pot or Sunday roast. I'll always give those hens a chance at living out the rest of their days first.

I have 3 left from my original flock. They will die of old age here on this farm. They were the fittest of the fit and survived my learning. Lol. Any others aren't nothing but livestock.

Great video. Put naked biochar in their little sand bowl 2 - 3 times a week. Also sprinkle it all over they're coop & bedding. This will make the compost better & the smell better.

This is old polish metod of keeping animals. Cleaned once a year, in autumn. The manure was kept in the 'animals house' to prevent loosing nitrogen. 😊

My hoop coop is sealed with 1/2" hardware cloth, no access to coop larger than that 1/2" except thru the raised automatic chicken door, 36: off the ground, the main door is kept closed unless I need access, have a hanging feeder and 5 gallon bucket cup waterer inside, have water and food outside as well, use hay bedding and occasionally add more hay, I can sweep everything out the door when it starts to smell, the old bedding is spread all over the chicken yard. I only have 6 birds now, just started laying this week.

You mean 10 eggs a day per chicken coop or ten egs a day for chicken? I know nothing about them lol

It seems like a good idea, but if you leave it uncleaned, it will pack so compact that it becomes intensely laborious to get it out after a while. If you must do this, clean it at least once a month

I'm currently with 3 silkies. Chicken math is currently happening because I am currently on the hunt for more silkies, as well as other chickens. In the Philippines, we have what we call Native Chickens. They basically are what the organic chickens are where I come from since they're smaller, have more flavorful meat, and are usually the ones that lay the brown eggs. They look just like every other chicken breed, both heritage and hybrid, but they're somewhat similar or smaller in size since they're crossbred with the imported breeds for their traits while merging the hardiness of the Jungle Fowl (wild chicken) to be able to survive the blazing sun and the rainy seasons that happen here in the Philippines. Apart from the Native Chickens, I'm gonna definitely be buying some broiler chickens as pets so they're not ending up on the chopping block.

Plus the chickens are happy to pick out any seeds and weeds from the hay, bugs from leaves. Entertains them and they are less likely to pick at each other.

I only have one main reason for not letting my chickens free range…..the stray cat that crosses my property. If I let them out, theyre at risk of becoming some stray cat’s food. The other reasons you put out like the overgrazing and poop are given, but the risk of losing my pets to a predator is just nerve wracking.
