How do you know if there should be a gasket vs using a sealant? Don't most engines use a gasket for valve covers, oil pans, etc? Or do people use both? Thanks! You rock!

Good question! If you don't know you always refer to the shop manual, the engineers who made the engine. But usually when mating 2 aluminum parts together with very tight and rigid tolerances like in VW or Porsche engines, it's a rule of thumb to use flange sealants like anaerobic not gasket sealers.

My question is, when weighing rods, pistons, etc. If there is a weight difference, how do you correct it? Can you sand down the center of a rod to lighten it up? Have a machinist take some metal off somewhere? What is your advice for this? Thank you!

Thank you really appreciate that! Yes if they are off slightly they can be sent to a machine shop but most of the time when you buy a set they are not off. If not corrected the engine will have a bad vibration.

i hear the tatata sound when accelerating when driving but it does not occur when accelerating when the car is parked or when the car runs at steady speed. what could be the reason?

You could be experiencing engine pinging (detonation) from low grade gas or an ignition problem. Could also be an engine rod knock or piston slap. Would have to be diagnosed to know for sure.

You can but all the numbers on the radio have to match or the radio will not play correctly and would have to be reprogrammed to your vehicle by the dealer. I have another video on a more permanent fix too if you want to watch the one.

Can you just leave the engine as it is, top up fluids and still use it? (I mean for example if its a very low value car that otherwise would go to the junkyard) What would happend to it? Would the engine seize? How long do you think it would be running?

Depending on the severity of the damage from a couple of minutes to a couple of weeks. The engine will ultimately seize.

I get this noise on some start ups similar to the video and I also got a P1009 error code recently. I just replaced the VVT solenoid, but the code came up after replacing the solenoid. Could doing what was done in video resolve the P1009 code?

Hi I have a bmw 520 deisel 2016 whenever I put it in reverse it jerks and when I put my foot down on the accelerator it jerks even more. For it to not jerk I have to put it in reverse and not put my foot on the accelerator let it drive by itself then put my foot down in order for it not to jerk. Took it to the mechanic he said it’s one of the valves in the transmission.

He's probably correct. Something in the valve body, one of the solenoids.

My lights don't flicker when I start the car but a part of my dashboard will flick off and then back on while ime driving. I gave a brand new battery and my alternator was just done ( it was a reman and it passed the voltage test, my battery only had a 40 % health status so I bought a brand new battery) I have a 2014 Ford Explorer XLT and the Check Charging System light is on. I checked the belt and belt looks good. Wires and hookups look good and clean

It's definitely a grounding issue, try checking the connections for the dash. Got to get a wiring diagram for your charging system and make sure all wiring is fine. Usually its a broken or corroded wiring causing this issue.

The sensor location should be the same on the Spectra as shown in the video.

Got to look at your owners manual to see if there is a specific fuse, but can be the blower motor resister that failed.

my car has very similar symptoms - No milky stuff, white smoke on start up and acceleration (not as much smoke as the car in the video tho). Smoke smells like petrol, not sweet smell. Could this be a head gasket? Or fuel injectors. Thank you!

Hard to know with doing some tests. Thick white smoke is coolant burning so can be caused by a failing head gasket not fully blown yet.

Do you think that if it were more serious and needed more than this spring to fix the rattle, would I have known by now through a check engine light? Just in your opinion of course.

Not really because the noise even though not detrimental to the engine short term, it's the spring that failed and should be replaced because that noise is a wearing sound that's not supposed to be there.

Ok I got a 2013 f150 same trouble but today we reached -12 C outside with a windchill of -16, after work in my way back home I started up my truck and radio didn’t work. Blinking clock, just showed the compass and the temperature from outside

I’m looking at beetles would the 2.5 or 1.8 be more reliable? I found a 2013 2.0 turbo with 100k, guy said tensioner was replaced under warranty and he changes oil regularly with amsoil euro, does that sound legit? Thanks

That engine should have the new tensioner already from the factory so if they said they replaced it who knows if they are truthful.

They both have their own quirks but one thing to remember is the 2.5 non turbo doesn't require premium fuel the 2.0 turbo does. Plus the 2,5 doesn't have a turbo to worry about either but the TSi 2.0 turbo engine is better overall in my opinion.

2013 forester 2.5x new to me. My car definitely sounds like a diesel engine. Runs smooth. Powerful, shifts well. Quiet in the car when driving. But man, its loud. My car os currently at a well referred mechanic. He thought it was an exhaust leak. I think hes out there still trying to find something ! Wild. Thank you for the share

I have an 2004 bmw e 46, 318ci I have removed the head because of blown head gasket and now realized that I have messed up the timing when I was dismantling it. I have forgotten to lock the flywheel and mark the chain. What would you advise when I am assembling it back? I got the locking set from amazing and have locked the camshafts when I was removing it but because of lack of patience I missed the step of locking the flywheel and now my concern is that, the chain may slipped and the crankshaft to move a few teethes.

You have to get the service information for your specific engine online try your library they have great repair manuals free of charge. You have to make sure timing is 100% or you will get codes and have to do it again.

As I understand VTC actuator must be in unlock position during the time of installation only. After that when engine is in everyday use VTC actuator must be locked all the time. Am I correct?

No when installing the actuator they want it unlocked so it doesn't damage the pin when torquing the bolt. The actuator is oil pressure controlled so depending on the engine load its changing constantly throughout the driving cycle.

They can but these kits were tested with great results. The factory ones are a poor design so your left with few options.

I'm back 9 months later argh!!! It seems the dreaded piston rings have caught up with me. I am quietly confident I could replace them after watching your videos and others. In your opinion would you remove the front of the car to completely remove the engine and do a complete tear down inc balance shaft removal/check , or would you leave the engine in and drop the rods pistons out the bottom and just replace them and restore the head? Cheers.

The last time I replaced the cam chain with your step by step vid and discovered the screen missing from the cam bridge. I kinda knew I was on borrowed time so now I want to go the whole way and even pull the balance shafts to check the screens on those. Thanks again dude I ll wait for your vid. I just hope the weather's not too brutal, last year it was mostly 7 below in the garage ffs.

Depends on what vehicle you have. The one in the video has the front diff built into the oil pan so no not in that case.

Bro went at it w the gasket maker, pretty sure you don’t need that much, and that can cause oil passages to clog… I have seen most only put the rtv on the main side of the block where you have the one orange and 3black rings. Other then that good video got my like

I have a 2004 S60 2.5T and she wont start. Changed the starter and started up find but next day just the click was back. Changed relay and tightened up everything but then got a hard crank and rough idle or it just clicks (hit or miss on starting) she threw a code of "fuelsysa ol fault", can you help me with this? I dont know where to go from here and cannot find any info on it. Also, I was going to change fuel pump but it was nowhere to be found so assuming it's in the fuel tank on my model. Also before the no start, every now and then after putting gas, she would start to randomly die and have a hard time starting back up. Thank you for your time and would really appreciate any help!!

I have at last solved my turbocharger. I had a big leakage on the turbo charge air hoses from turbocharger to intercooler. I replace the two hoses and that solved my turbocharger problem. Today I have invested in a modern bi directional car diagnostic Launch X431 CRP919X BT. Thanks to black friday i have got a good price for it.
