To be honest, this can happen in any crowded subway. It seems to be more prone in European countries, but can also happen elsewhere. Just keep tabs on your stuff and make it as hard as possible for a pickpocket to get stuff out. I usually keep the wallet in the bottom of my pocket (or if I have it, in a pouch inside my jeans under my pants and secure it to the pants with a clip).
@wj27914 күн бұрын
I get the feeling that there is no great clamor to eliminate pickpockets in Italy. I once had a very telling conversation with a lady while we were riding the Circumvesuviana train out of Naples. Me. I have been told that there are usually pickpockets on this train. She: Oh, it is true. I ride this train every day and am robbed about once a year. Me: Really? Why would Italians tolerate such a thing? She: Well, thieves have to eat too. Stealing is their job. This laissez-faire attitude may upset tourists when they lose their money and important papers, but it becomes a norm in many places in Europe.

In America, if someone puts their hand in your pocket without permission. You can hit them. It’s called protecting your property and self. Is this not the same in Rome?
@HR-wd6cwКүн бұрын
You'd be lucky if that's all they did (hit you). You might be greeted with a gun or knife if you're not so lucky. In the US it's probably tolerated more but in some countries, you could still be charged for assault or battery so it's best not to. I was in worse situations and just keeping tabs on your stuff is key (I use a "wallet chain" when traveling but also make sure my wallet is in the bottom of my pocket with other stuff on top of it making it harder to get out for pickpockets).

Listen - I'm Roman born & raised, yeah it's an extreme city, massively beautiful: no other place has that quantity & quality of monuments & art. But on the other side you have to be aware of gypsies & southamericans pickpocketing you on the subway & sometimes even on bus. Moreover we have a garbage problem because both Romans & immigrants are careless and just litter 24/7 while simultaneously not having sufficient garbagemen personnel to clean up, so all sorts of junk accumulate at any corner. It's a combination of pre-designed annihilation of Italy from European Union who loves to keep us weak & dependant + corrupted politicians (puppets of E.U. & z¡onists) + overall laziness & herd mentality of Italians who never react and just passively accept all sorts of mistreatments. I moved out of Sh¡taly 3 years ago and never plan to return. I'll enjoy my pizza bianca & mortadella slice watching Rome burn, the cancer is irredeemable at this point. Again, you should come, just be aware of the downsides (which are minimal if you are not dumb as hell)

Groups of 3-5 all, Roma descent, operating in every EU city with overcrowded public transportations. You can really recognize them from afar. They usually have 1-2 males as a muscle in case someone caught them. We used to had them in Athens GR metro system, but ever since one of them, ended up in the train tracks, under "mysterious" circumstances, they are avoiding the metro and are only concentrated at Plaka, Monastiraki and Acropoli. It's sad, but only one way to deal with them.

There might be other groups there, so I'd not count on all of the pickpockets looking like this, I just assume anyone near me can be a pickpocket and hold my purse accordingly. Incidentally, I just read about a case in Rome recently when 3 male bosses beat up an 8-month pregnant roma woman because she didn't want to steal anymore. Hi, After spending a five night stay in Rome, exiting today for Lisbon. Rome is a romantic place despite the many negative things that you see , such as Homeless people around the Vatican in St Peters Square and many people asking for a cigarette or money. There are many people from Bangladesh who are working in the Service Sector. My main point here , is about the pickpockets in Rome Metro Trains. As my wife and I were to enter the Train, a couple with a pram , blocked the entrance. Another lady with a hat covering her left palm tried to open the bag of my wife. Simultaneously, another man with a jacket covering his hand , opened my sling bag. Sensing something is wrong, I noticed that my wife's sling bag was half open and mine too. Half open. As we got altered, and reminded about the Pickpockets in our country, we moved away. Fellow travellers may read this and please be careful in bus/ Metro in Rome as all four ( the couple with the pram, two pickpockets) were a gang.
