Fans never hated gohan as the main character, they hated the dog shit that was the saiyaman arc. If saiyaman arc would have had goku as the protagonist, sales would have still plummeted.

I will never stop loving Gohan. I think he's got the right balance of fighting spirit as a Saiyan warrior but still the kindness of a human who just wants to live a life. Not always wanting to fight, not always wanting to be pacifist. Put respect on my boy's name, he's deserved it.
