Maybe he can’t do a pull up? The average for untrained men is 1-3.

Thanks for the feedback. In my practice, straight and bent arm exercises are trained on separate days, understanding that all upper body strength is driven from the shoulders and stabilized by the scapula. Also, straight arm training is a lot about soft tissue development, so you don't want to train these sessions to failure as it results in things like torn ligaments and tendons. This is my straight arm pulling, and more advanced variations would be getting into front lever progressions. I am doing chin-ups on my bent arm days. I have some external rotation and bicep limitations I am still working through after pulling both distal biceps in 2021
