Karen Carpenter was a drummer. A great drummer. But brother said that can't see that person with that great voice. So she was forced to come out in front. She hated it.

Nice reaction. The Carpenters' albums are vastly underappreciated. A close listen to any of their albums will demonstrate the duo's attention to detail in arranging, orchestration, and performance, as well as an excellent choice of backing instrumentalists. This LP from 1971 (known to fans as "the Tan Album") also introduced the Carpenters' familiar logo, designed by Craig Braun and Associates (at the same time Braun was designing the artwork for the Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers" album). The "Carpenters" LP was a bestseller, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and eventually going quadruple platinum. Its singles are pop classics: "For All We Know" (chart peak, #3), "Rainy Days and Mondays" (#2), and "Superstar" (#2). There's also a potential hit that did not get tapped for single release ("Let Me Be the One"). The Bacharach-David Medley (medley, not melody) by this time had already become a concert staple for the duo when it made its appearance on this album. It's a showcase for Richard Carpenter's talent as an arranger. The final song, "Sometimes," by composer Henry Mancini and daughter Felice, performed by Karen with Richard on piano alone and no overdubbed background vocals, makes for a warm and intimate close. This LP won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus for the year 1971.

Linda Ronstadt covered Hasten Down the Wind (and also used the song title as the album title as well). She also covered Poor, Poor Pitiful Me. She helped Warren keep food on the table by covering his stuff

This band can't fall under any one genre. They're multi-faceted and no two songs sound the same. Their first three live albums are fantastic, and they sound much harder. On this particular album, all five members sing at least one song.

Nice review. He's a deep rabbit hole. You need to try and find a way to listen to Poor, Poor Pitifull Me. It's not the sad song you might have thought it was by the title. Instead it's a real banger and was covered by Linda Rondstadt and was a hit for her. He has a unique style and as he grows he encompasses more styles but always with a lot of his special humor. I was hooked pretty early and really miss him.
