Thanks Logan!☝Personally the ONLY way I can get up to speed with this difficult riff is STRICT ALTERNATE picking: very relaxed right wrist with D,U,D,U,D,U,D,U…the whole time for the verse. I’m normally a fingerpicker so perhaps a plectrum is somewhat alien? There’s more leeway with pre-chorus and chorus with consecutive downstrokes but strict alternating picking has to be, otherwise my brain can’t get on autopilot!?☝🤣 Just wondering whether Frusciante plays the riff strict alternating picking? Other KZbin tutorials also emphasise strict alternating picking.☝

Good that you're pointing out some things that people usually miss. But your video is also full of mistakes. For a start, you're naming the chords wrong. The song is in F, so the chords are F-Bb-Ab-Db. Not G# and C#. Secondly you're playing it wrong too. He doesn't hit the sus4 on every stroke for the F and Ab. You hear the sus4 only vaguely on a couple of strokes. It's because he bars (as you correctly noted) and hits it almost by mistake. Also there's no major third in the Bb and the Db. He is probably fingering the third since he uses the same bar position as the F and Ab, but if you listen he doesn't play it at any point (maybe he touches it very lightly on the first Bb but it's barely there if so). Most people get that wrong too.
