Our family has Irish and Cherokee roots. You just have to look at pictures of my Grandfather and his mother to see the cherokee and my great great mother on my moms side looked tipical Irish. My granfather looked like an old indian chief in his photos. His mom was cherokee. Because of old family fights and bigotry about it we know nothing about the cherokee part only that my grandparents had to leave their town because it was considered a mixed marriage and wasn't accepted. Old hatreds die hard.

When Roots was published in 1976, Haley initially claimed that the story was a retelling of his own ancestry and based on years of extensive research which he also said was backed by historical documents. Amongst many claims, he stated as fact that Kunta Kinte was his ancestor who was renamed Toby Waller, and Chicken George was the son of Tom Lea. Genealogists began researching Haley's claims and found many of his stories to not only to be inaccurate, but blatant attempts to misdirect his readers about his own genealogy. It has never been proven, outside of Haley's 'oral tradition' that Kunta Kinte was a real person. There was so much misinformation in Roots that black intellectual Stanley Crouch called Haley "a ruthless hustler" and Roots "a hoax". With the mounting evidence against his genealogical claims, by the 1990s Haley shifted gears and began to downplay the accuracy of Roots and his ancestry in the story. It is astounding to this day, many in the black community still believe Kunta Kinte was a living, breathing person, and not a myth invented in the mind of Haley.
