Interesting song. About as non-specific as many spiritual-type songs of that time, but does seem to have intensity of desire expressed.

Around the fall of ‘70 or ‘71 Scott Ross started playing over WAPE in Jacksonville, Florida. Turned the radio on while I got dressed for church. For an hour he played Larry Norman’s Bootleg album. It was exactly what I needed. It was real. Nothing like it ever, Jesus Rock. In a year I’d transitioned into a hardcore Jesus Freak. I never looked back.

Does anybody here remember the Maranatha Church of the Nazarene in New Milford NJ and Pastor Charlie Rizzo in the ‘70s? Coffeehouses on Friday nights were epic. Charlie was a great guitar player and preacher, and a lot of young people gave their lives to Christ in this years. He baptized me in the church pool outside, as was author Jonathan Cahn. Phil Keaggy, Larry Norman and 2nd Chapter of Acts were standouts for me.

Thanks this weas the music I wanted so bad but got very little of it despite living 12 miles from the Agape Farm where the Jesus Festivals were held in Mt.Union Pa. We got some on WTLR in State College and some on the College radio station at Juniata College but it wasn't looked on favorably by the local Christian leadership. But it was enough to get me hooked on it. Without it I would have walked away from God. Thanks Jesus for loving Jesus Music.

Minor correction: Kenn Gulliksen is spelled with two "n"s. Loved this trip down memory lane! Glad you mentioned bands like The Exkursions (Mike Johnson later recorded solo stuff and also as part of Matthews, Taylor, Johnson), Spokane's Wilson McKinley, the very talented Seawind, and the wonderful Marj Snyder. I'm sure there were many you couldn't quite fit in, such as Eden (band) from Phoenix and the Hallelujah Joy Band.

Spirit in the Sky was not a Christian song. Check these lyrics. Never been a sinner, I never sinned, I've got a friend in Jesus. This is mockery, not faith. Jesus was called "The Friend of Sinners". You can't be Jesus' friend unless you have been a sinner. (1Jo 1:10 KJV) If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
@StevenWeyhrich2 ай бұрын
I chose to include that because it was an example of the people's search for God at the time. Certainly there are good arguments for not including it, and you are correct in your comments.

I’ve noticed some songs you put some of the song and you cut it off like the Victor you put the end on and there was a song after Honey trees when I think about heaven or when I think of heaven, I think it’s called and you put another song there and I can’t find who sings it. With a very pretty song and I know a lady sang, and then she joined a group of men, so where would I find where that song is in the title the artist of it thanks

I still have about 30 of those songs on Albums. Some of them I did not know. We did not have a Christian Music station in Jonesboro, AR in the 1970's So many of the songs were at friends house and then going to the record store to have to order it. I met BJ Thomas in Juneau Alaska and he came with Michael Johnson , and Wayne Carson to the office and purchased lunch for the office and they did the unplugged version with just their guitars. It was great. BJ did the mighty clouds of Joy.

I started high school in 1969 - graduated in June 1973. I was definitely a lover of the Jesus People music of that time. In fact, I still have most of my albums from that time. I was pleased to see you included groups like Children of the Day. I would have given Keith Green more of a presence on the video - but maybe that was true for me since I grew up in CA.
@StevenWeyhrich6 ай бұрын
I have every album of Keith Green's also, and did not live in CA. I picked songs based on what "charted" back in the day; so no one was favored or disfavored based on anything else but that. In the years before there was a "top 40" list of Christian songs, I just did my best to locate songs from each year.
