Exactly the advice I was looking for. Thank you! One more question: when one plans to fill voids with a colored epoxy (as I saw you did on one of the slabs) can you use the colored epoxy to flood the end grain and voids all at the same time? Or must you flood the end grain FIRST then fill the large voids? My concern is pouring a black epoxy on end grain and then having it discolor the wood itself. Would love any advice you can share!
@Woodensoul27 күн бұрын
Most welcome! If you flood your slab with coloured epoxy, you will colour your wood and it will have a slight sheen of the colour you chose. If you don't want that, flood first with transparent one, then move to colour...

Im curious, for these tests did you apply the ceramics to bare sanded wood, or did you first apply a traditional wood finish first, with the ceramics on top (and if so, what wood finish?). I think some of them advertised it this way, and im curious how something like a hardwax oil base layer would impact these tests. Thanks so much for investigating this, its very valuable!

Great video! I just got my Workstation and Shaper Origin and I have a quick question: do you find you have issues with this setup when working close to the near side edge?I ask because you won't be able to use the support bar with this extended shelf. Unless you have something of equal thickness to your stock, don't you run the risk of the router not sitting flat when working near that edge? I like the idea of extending the space available, but it seems like you would still run into the issue of needing to use extra pieces to keep things co-planer which was a big part of why I got the Workstation.
@WoodensoulАй бұрын
You are absolutely right, removing the back bar (the side bars don’t provide much stability, because they aren’t coplanar to the domino field) can reduce stability. It’s not a question of “either/or”. Both the small and large shelves are useful, depending your use case. It depends on your workpiece size.

I have the SpeTool and out of the box it is OK. Not great, in my mind, but with some (hopefully) easy additions, it could be great. My big issue is what I will call dust management. Not dust collection, that would take a bit of work, but managing the dust so it does not fly everywhere. Without dust management I get a lot of chips under the wheels. This of course alters the height of the router. Adding brushes to keeps chips from the path of the wheels would help a lot. Or, adding brushes to the acrylic router base would keep the chips localized. I say hopefully easy additions, I haven't done them yet. I'm thinking brushes to keep chips from the wheels might be the easiest way, rather than adding brushes to the acrylic plate. If I add them to the plate I would have to consider adding dust collection. But dust collection would require considering hose management, and mods to the acrylic plate, and that it currently too much hassle for me at this time. Maybe in the future.
@WoodensoulАй бұрын
I agree that the dust collection is a problem, especially chips falling before the wheels, but that’s a problem for all these jigs. Ir are you aware of a jig that solves this issue? zI typically just blow tge dust away with a compressor, after each pass…

I'm planning on 3D printing a holder for a brush I bought on amazon. I haven't made up my mind on on where, but I am leaning towards putting it around the wheels. Putting it on the router base is more problematic as the cutter isn't always a fixed distance from the base.

I've seen that SpeTool ad, and the rig does look like a decent budget option compared to some other options. The one criticism I have with the SpeTool is that it doesn't have a way to lock the gantry in a fixed position to allow you to plane with the grain instead of doing the "row boat" motion across the grain. I'm sure with some ingenuity one could find a way to add that feature, but it would be really nice to see a company add that feature. Another great option is ToT Sled. More pricey, but you get all the bells and whistles for a fraction of the cost of say the "Red" brand
@skyehagen5521Ай бұрын
I have the SpeTool, and I use it with the grain. Locking the acrylic plate in place is easy. The mechanism for locking the gantry in place is flimsy, and in my mind is too much work. The gantry has wheels making side to side movement easy. Moving the acrylic plate has too problems. First, if the plate gets skewed a little, it might jam a little. Second, to move the plate requires you to hold the router. That might add weight to the router and cause the aluminum channel to bend slightly. I lock the plate in place, then roll the whole unit from one end of the table to the other. Move the plate a little, then repeat the process. (See my other comment about dust management, I do have to clear the path of the wheels from time to time.)
@WoodensoulАй бұрын
Skyehagen already gave a detailed and complete answer, you can do this by locking the router plate
@sharpstaryeahyou2 ай бұрын

@Woodensoul2 ай бұрын
Thanks 👊🏼 It’s difficult to calculate because different woods suck up different amounts of resin. Over time you will get a feeling for it. Start with 100ml for a 50cm diameter cookie slab and observe how far it takes you

@Woodensoul2 ай бұрын
Hi Luis. In general I don’t think that Ceramics are stable enough for outdoor applications, but I haven’t tried. But given that even for indoors they recommend re-coating regularly, I don’t think you will be happy with it. But specifically to your case, you know that Ipe is one of the few woods that doesn’t need coating at all, except UV coating if you don’t want the color to change? ipewoods.com/resources/questions-answers/#:~:text=No%2C%20you%20do%20not%20need,that%20you%20use%20Messemers%20U.V.
@luisgonzalez84152 ай бұрын
@@Woodensoul I wish I would have not stained. I uses this exact Messmers UV from your link. It drastically darkened the wood. At sunset it starts looking dark burgundy, not at all what I was expecting. I was hoping that ceramics would hold up in exterior use just like it does for cars. If I have to reapply every year I'm fine with that. But like you said I might not need anything at all. I will be stripping the stain next weekend. I hope it comes off easily.
@Woodensoul2 ай бұрын
@@luisgonzalez8415 Ugh, that sounds like a pain. Hopefully some sanding should do the job, Ipe should not suck up the stain very deep, given how dense it is.

If one wants to find an equivalent in the car industry here is Black Wood's H9 composition : Silicon dioxide : 85% Polysilane : 3% Nitrogen fluoride : 12% (but I can't find if it's a monofluoride, diafluoride, trifluride...) Silicon dioxide is the main protective ingredient, it is said that graphene can be even better but I can't find any solid study confirming it. Anyway the last coat is mainly made of Silicon dioxide. Polysilane is a polymer, Nitrogen fluorides are usually gazes (let's hope it's not trifluoride as it is toxic and a pretty strong greenhouse gas). It is said to closed back the bottle asap between distributions, so I guess evaporation of Nitrogen fluoride is what is making the Polysilane binding the Silicon dioxide molecules together.

If the pane is not sufficiently dry, i.e. if it has less than 10% moisture, or more like 8%, then various places will crack... You either put a metal band around it or dry it properly. I tend to prefer the latter, because wood tends to redirect the force that acts on it when it has to. And so if it were only possible to move it up or down, you wouldn't even be able to fill the cracks afterwards.
@Woodensoul2 ай бұрын
I am not 100% sure why you are writing this. The wood cracked during drying. when I started processing it it was below 10% rest humidity. I never intended to prevent the crack from happening, it’s part of the process.
