I can attest to keeping the blade sharp. I was cutting some leather and sliced the tip of my middle finger off. Not a fun injury to heal!

Looks great. Considering purchasing the pattern but may not have all the tools yet. Which tool did you use to make the groove so the leather will fold? Thank you!
@JamesBerry15 күн бұрын
Most important tools are hole punches and a rivet press. All the rest are just "quality of life" and not necessary for the build. The groover is actually a cheap groover from Amazon. It's a crappy tool that I can't recommend... But it worked for this video so...

You mentioned something that I may want to get or maybe have. L'Indispensable Brass Knife. Someone convinced me to buy this years ago. Went dull. Can't sharpen it. It sits. Did you say there was a segmented blade that would fit in this handle? Or is it a similar handle. Really. This L'Indispensable Brass Knife had burrs and sharp edges and was so disapointing when I got it. No leather crafter I watch uses it except the guy who makes blades for it. And that may only be on camera. I pursheds Eric Corter's Brass Weighted No. 2 handle. Sharp, stiff no 2 blades. Heavy brass. Thanks James. Happy Everything Good this year!!!!
@JamesBerry14 күн бұрын
I have a love-hate relationship with l'Indispensable. Just like you, I was certain this was THE knife to own after reading countless things about it online. But then after using it I just couldn't keep it sharp and I find the handle to not be as comfortable as I hoped it to be. I have since been gifted a CharterMade Indispensable blade (by Chartermade themselves) and find this to be an absolutely wonderful upgrade to the knife. This issue is now that it's very hard to justify price of the Indispensable knife plus a high-end blade when you can get gorgeous cuts from really affordable craft / hobby knives. Utlimately, regarding the Indispensable brass knife, I can't recommend it as a purchase. But if you have it already I 100% recommend upgrading to the chartermade blade if you have the cash and like the shape of the Indispensable handle.. The knife I mention in the video is this cheap knife I made a video about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoKZonSQfbhshNE Hope this helps :)

Just a suggestion, take stem measurement with the crown pushed into the stem, as this replicates where the crown will truly reside when screwed down to case. Giving you a much better fit. You can see you have a few mm of "play" beyond the crown thread when you fitted the stem back in. Doing this means when you unscrew your crown, it will "pop out" exactly at the end of the thread with no extra space, meaning you have plenty of crown spring movement to screw it back in, keeping things watertight and not overstretching the internal spring. You can see your crown was not entirely sitting flush with the case when screwed down as the spring was at it's full movement. Having said all that, yours worked great, so all depends on how particular you want to be. Great video, lovely watch! Enjoy!

6:10 The Army would give its specifications and buy the finished goods from contractors. This satchel was not issued to the privates but to the NCOs for them to store geographic maps published by the Swiss Topographic Office. Those have a precise folding pattern, and the satchel has been designed accordingly.

As grant stone make shoes with it is it actually possible to rewax the leather woth your mentioned sapphire product back to original white?
@JamesBerryАй бұрын
No I definitely do not think you'll be able to get it back to white as the white is an added layer. The whole idea is that the white comes off and showcases the unique patina that you are creating with your item.

I hadn't realised the difference between Leather Dye and Pro Dye and will transition as I run down my stock of Leather dye. However, one question; what do you do with the left-over , thinned dye? Will it keep in an airtight container? I've also ordered a jar of Saphir renovator! Thanks for your advice.

Exactly that: I mix them in old jam jars that I then close up, mark what is inside on the jar and store for later use.

I have my father's doctor's bag, and it must be 70+ years old. I'm pretty sure he never used it, as he went to work for the VA out of medical school, and worked there for many years. He went to medical school after WW II, and I don't know exactly when that was for him. He had his MD by 1950, so this bag must be nearly 80 years old.

Folk need to be aware that carrying lock blades in public is illegal in UK/most EU countries. Tucked away in a tool box or rucksac (suitable cause) probably acceptable, but wearing on a belt loop whilst walking around in public probably not defensible in most jurisdictions

for details like the starbursts i adjust the print to make them slightly wider at the end and trim them back with a chisel to get sharp points. a very sharp chisel cuts through PLA without issue. i shave it back with a few strokes then use thin needle nose pliers to break the shavings off the base. if they are particularly stubborn i use a thin sacrificial tip on a cheap soldering iron to melt them out at the base. i keep the heat pretty low, just enough to melt the PLA so the radiant heat doesn't cause warping of the nearby fine details. i very rarely have to do this, usually when i took too large a bite with the chisel. thin cuts will break out easily with just the pliers.
