First saw this as a 5 year old in 1972 at the Drive In and it just had the hairs on the back of my neck go up when this opening came on! Love this film. Have the DVD and never gets old.

Great movie. One of only two Clint made for MGM. A Warner Brothers actor all the way. I believe he had difficulty with the studio. Anyway, this and Kelly’s Heroes two top films at opposite ends of the genre spectrum. Serious espionage thriller to awesome war comedy.

Worst movie I’ve ever seen, acting along with the laughable action is diabolically bad. Typical Americans and British making out that the Germans were stupid. I’ve never watched a movie where I want them to be caught and punished by firing squad more in my life

They should have used their resources to clear the access to the port of Antwerp immediately, as there was hardly any German soldier around near the Scheldt estuary, then. It would have shortened the Allied supply lines drastically. But Antwerp was first of all important for the Americans. The British still counted on getting the French Channel ports intact, which were much closer to them, but these were still in German hands.

The first time I saw this movie, as a kid back in the 90's, was on a TV channel dedicated to movies from the 40's up to the 60's or 70's. I wasn't even paying that much attention, as I was planning to go to bed when I stumbled upon the opening. The whistling of the wind, combined with the increasing rhythm of the drums caught my attention, and when the Ju 52 passed overhead, I went with it, and has been ever since. And I didn't go into bed until 3 am.

What I find interesting is how quickly the airplane was developed into such an effective weapon of war. It was only 37 year before, that the Wright brothers had flown their first flimsy plane. In WWI, planes were still only little more than wooden struts and wires. Yet in WWII, they developed to the point where they could virtually flatten entire cities, hundreds of miles away. I also noticed how in this movie, both the Berliners and the Londoners seemed to dismiss the approach of enemy planes. Nobody seemed to realize how vulnerable cities were to aerial bombardment.

It’s interesting watching the reactions of the three men to the story. Heydrich grasps the point, but only on a surface level. Eichmann is baffled by it, even after it’s explained to him, because he has literally no empathy or understanding of complex human behaviour. Muller probably gets the point immediately, but seems contemptuous because love and hate are irrelevant to him with respect to the job they have to do. Heydrich is intelligent and refined, Muller is intelligent and brutal, and Eichmann is less intelligent but much more organized and meticulous. All three are terrifying in different ways.
@snakeplissken8316 күн бұрын
All three would have been contemptuous of it. Müller was, at heart, a policeman who simply wanted to carry out his job as effectively and efficiently as possible. The story would have seemed an irrelevance. Eichmann was a vindictive, bureaucratic non-entity who, again, simply saw it as his job. Heydrich was a violent psychopath who fundamentally lacked the empathy to understand the story. Kritzinger probably knew he was wasting his breath, but his conscience wouldn't allow him to not at least try to make these men understand.

The filmmakers made a mistake at 1:00. Almost any underground station would have been more suitable than Ruhleben, because Ruhleben is located above ground and has two elevated platforms. In addition, the station is in a more rural area and not in the city centre.
