Thank you Meme! Kinda like watching paint dry but I was curious about the concept of selling just cocoons. We just need to get you a sign saying “Filming, no overhead drone activity or planes or visiting! lol! You are the best! Thank you for sharing!
@MemesWorms11 сағат бұрын
I agree and honestly I would rather watch paint dry than count cocoons.

I think I would rather count worms. They are easier to spot, but the trouble is they move... ~ Sandra

I wonder if your thermometers are holding the plastic up enough to let more air under it allowing the bedding to dry faster.
@MemesWormsКүн бұрын
The thermometers don't seem to be a problem.

What a great idea. What do you think about adding shredded cardboard to speed up the rate of drying up? More surface area equals faster drying.
@MemesWormsКүн бұрын
That would work if you are not trying to separate worms for sale as then you will have carboard that wont go through the sifter and have to clean that off worms.
@cs7717Күн бұрын
@MemesWorms Ah, yes, I didn't think of that.

I think that part of why this works is that it acts like a wick and brings the moisture up where it can evaporate. For my next batch of precompst, I plan to use an aquarium bubbler on a timer to inject air to the bottom of a garbage can. Basically a small scale static aerated compost system. I'm thinking the same principal but with increased airflow would also work for drying down castings.
@wallyswormsКүн бұрын
That system works great for big and small growers. Nice video, happy new year and a bunch of worms.

I’ve seen folks comment that adding biochar can help with the odor. This is a good place for the char to pick up its biology, too. I think.

Isn't it true that being immersed in the smell of a fresh, healthy earth environment/ecosystem makes a person prefer to do the work by themselves? I imagine there are times when you absolutely wouldn't have it any other way! In so many ways working your herd whilst maintaining your operation seems to be a real and personal sanctuary... let alone doing your part to keep us all a little healthier! Well done!

That’s impressive! How long should it take to get to 1 million worms? I’m starting my herd in breeder bins I set up yesterday. I have 6,000 new worms coming Friday and 6000 later next week? Should I start a nursery bin too for the cocoons and whisps? Seems like a lot to start with,but I think I can work on multiplying my worm count before I even think about buying a trommel.

APROX 19 MONTHS if red wigglers . Where did you buy your worms and what species did you buy?
@johnwright64032 күн бұрын
I bought from Uncle Jim’s They are a “mix” hopefully red wrigglers and European night crawlers

I plan on using them to restore my 20 acre fields with vermicompost twice per year. Top dress with manure spreader on existing hay

Do you breed species in separate bins or just keep them together?
@MemesWormsКүн бұрын
If from him they will mostly be blue worms. Blue worms are a tropical worm and can not with stand the cold so don't put them outside.

I tried making wheat for the first time. I did it with compost and coco coir It turned out great, But one problem the worms never touched it. I left it in the bin for two weeks not a worm ate it. Removed it and fed them worm chow it was gone in a day. I watched several different video's, and I followed them to a tee

I am new to vermiculture... after you have your worm castings finished and sifted... do you have to wait a period of time before you can use them? If so how long? Do you use them straight or do you mix them with soil? Can they be used straight for seed starting?
@MemesWorms6 күн бұрын
Welcome to the niche!! You can use them right away or wait a bit just don't let them dry out. Use no more than 20% castings at a time. You can top dress a few tbsp to a plant. When using for seed starter it's best to use 20% castings.

I love the way you show all facets of worm farming, particularly on the commercial side. Too many want to gloss over the work and make it look so simple to be a big commercial enterprise. It is WORK, though it is very worthwhile. We have come a long way since buying our trommel from you, though we have a long way to go. Much of our growth has to be because of what we have learned from you. Thanks for keeping it real. BTW, don't worry about the camera/sound levels. If I was watching for entertainment, maybe it would be off-putting, but since I'm watching to learn, it only shows it is real.

@MemesWorms20 күн бұрын
Coffee grounds are great to use
@Xray.7120 күн бұрын
@ yes I understand that but why though? Is it a grit they like? Is it the acidity? Do red wigglers not move before they get their slime on coffee in the mornings?
@MemesWorms19 күн бұрын
Coffee grounds are just one of many inputs worms love! Cardboard, veggie scraps, compost are all to name a few. Worms eat microbes. Microbes breakdown all the th8ngs I just mentioned so this is why they love them.
@zilpavandergragt223620 күн бұрын
My worms only get pre compost, I was doing it the same way but have swapped over to using my 2 compost tumblers, I find it less backbreaking. I turn them about twice per day, I have the kind with double barrels and a turning handle, so it is not hard to turn. I stagger the filling of them so I have a constant supply on rotation.
